Something else to add to the very long list of reasons we don't trust the Catholic church or the Pope, they've recently declared Junípero Serra to be a saint. This is a man who was an inquisitor for the Spanish Inquisition, and a masochist who used to beat himself bloody. Truly a sick individual, but that stuff pales in comparison to what he did to the Native Americans. Here's a statement from the National Congress of American Indians:
“[Pope Francis] has chosen to proceed with the canonization of Franciscan Missionary Junípero Serra—a man who played a pivotal role in the enslavement, torture, and other violent tactics perpetrated against Native peoples though the mission system in California. This canonization is strongly opposed by California tribes because it validates the monstrous history of the Catholic church during that time.”
So this man, who was central in destroying native cultures, is considered to be a "saint" by Pope Francis? The Pope was just apologizing for the way the church treated native people, now he's granting sainthood to the person responsible for the behaviors he's apologizing for. And this is a man lecturing the whole world on morality?
