Winter Storm Yogi Delivers Snow from Rockies to Upper Midwest

Winter Storm Yogi will wind down on Friday after spreading a swath of snow from the Rockies to the Upper Midwest.

Snow will linger across parts of Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and the U.P. of Michigan during the day on Friday.

Dust Storm Shuts Arizona-New Mexico Interstate

A dust storm rolled through southeastern Arizona near the New Mexico border Wednesday, closing a 112-mile stretch of Interstate 10. The freeway was reopened Wednesday night after winds died down. Dust storms, or haboobs, are common in the Southwest in spring when strong storm systems move through the Rockies, generating gusty winds.

Birds rule the air, but hundreds of different species have seen a population decline so frightening, experts say they could vanish off the face of the earth at anytime.

As of 2012, more than 1300 bird species are facing extinction, according to BirdLife International. The World's Rarest Birds, a new book, features photos of 800 of those birds.

The latest of late-season snowstorms, Winter Storm Yogi prepared to blanket the Upper Midwest with more snow on Thursday evening after dumping more than two feet of snow in parts of Colorado and Wyoming.

Nebraska

Eastern Nebraska experienced near-blizzard conditions from Yogi on Thursday morning and the state's Department of Transportation urged extreme caution on nearly all roads. More than a foot of snow have fallen in some parts of the state as Yogi finally pulled away Thursday afternoon.

Dramatic pictures of flooding across the Midwest Thursday punctuate day two of a storm system that also brought severe weather and snow to parts of the Plains and Midwest.

The rain will taper overnight, but the damage has already been done. Illinois Governor Pat Quinn declared a State of Emergency to help with widespread flooding issues. Hundreds of flights were cancelled from Chicago's airports, and thousands of people were left without power.

The latest of late-season snowstorms, Winter Storm Yogi continued its slow trudge eastward on Wednesday morning, dumping more than two feet of snow in parts of Colorado and Wyoming.

"In terms of direct impact to travel, it looks like Wyoming will take the brunt of Winter Storm Yogi," said weather.com meteorologist Nick Wiltgen. "But aside from the typical travel woes, our other concern is the potential for Yogi to bring more snow to the Red River Basin, further escalating the flood risk later this spring when warmer weather arrives."

Tornadoes reportedly touched down in Comanche County and Lawton in southwestern Oklahoma on Wednesday, causing minor damage to a Goodyear tire plant and trapping four people inside a mobile home that got knocked off its foundation, authorities said. The severe weather also created a dramatic chase for meteorologist Mike Bettes and his Tornado Hunt team.

No injuries were reported. Comanche County spokesman Jacob Russell said the mobile home was blown over at Elgin, about 20 miles northeast of Lawton.

Quake Hits Iran, Pakistan; Dozens Killed

TEHRAN, Iran -- A major earthquake flattened homes and offices on both sides of the Iran-Pakistan border Tuesday, rattling buildings as far away as New Delhi and Dubai and killing dozens of people, including 34 in one Pakistani town.

The massive quake was the second in a week to hit Iran in less than a week, but it was not immediately clear how many people the trembler killed in Iran.

Colorado residents on the Front Range are digging out as Winter Storm Yogi brings more spring snow to their state. More than a foot of snow was reported in Estes Park and Nederland by Tuesday morning. About 10 inches of snow fell in the Denver area.
