Tornado Damage in Corning

 

Tornadoes moved through parts of northern Kansas for a second straight day yesterday.

The storms damaged several properties late yesterday afternoon in the small Nemaha County town of Corning.

Authorities there say a tornado destroyed at least one home and damaged outbuildings, while several sheds and outbuildings were also hit.

There are no reports of injuries or any deaths.

A large tornado was reported north of Salina near the Ottawa County town of Bennington.

UPDATES:

4:43 p.m CDT Tuesday: A tornado is reported to be on the ground 13 miles north of Scottsbluff, Neb.

4:42 p.m. CDT Tuesday: Debris was reported by a spotter 10 miles north, northeast of Mitchell, Neb.

4:31 p.m. CDT Tuesday: Winds from the tornado near Corning, Kan., are estimated to be 150-160 mph. Impact to Corning is likely within the next 20 minutes.

Jan Davis & Teresa Price of Tinker Federal Credit Union describe how they hid in a vault along with 12 other workers and eight bank members as the building was destroyed.

"It was crowded" says Davis, "but if there were more people we would have crowded them right in."

The beginnings of Monday's (May 20) disastrous tornado in Oklahoma were caught from space by a weather satellite in orbit.

The GOES-13 satellite, which is operated by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), imaged the movement of storm systems in the south-central United States between May 19 and 20, including the storm that sparked a tornado in Moore, Okla., estimated to be an EF-4 in strength, on Monday at 2:56 p.m. CDT (3:56 p.m. EDT, or 1956 GMT).
