~ Space Weather Update~ M3 Class Solar Flare~ Christmas Conjunction

URSID METEOR SHOWER: Earth is passing through a stream of debris from Comet 8P/Tuttle, source of the annual Ursid meteor shower. Forecasters expect the shower to peak on Dec. 22nd with as many as 10 meteors per hour streaming from a radiant near Polaris, the North Star. Occasionally, Earth hits a denser-than-usual patch of debris and rates increase 5- to 10-fold. However, no one can predict when these outbursts occur. Listen for Ursid echoes on Space Weather Radio. Meteor alerts: text, voice

CHRISTMAS CONJUNCTION: According to some scholars, the Star of Bethlehem might have been a close encounter between Venus and Jupiter. The two brightest planets in the night sky, merged, would have made a spectacle of Biblical proportions. This Christmas, NASA's STEREO-B probe is observing a conjunction of three planets--Venus, Earth and Jupiter:

Unlike conjunctions of the distant past, this one includes our home planet. STEREO-B is located on the far side of the sun where it can look back and see Earth along with other worlds in the Solar System. Only NASA's twin STEREO probes, equipped with their high dynamic-range Heliospheric Imagers, can witness this kind of conjunction.

~ Space Weather Update~ 2 M Class Solar Flares in 24 Hours

Lia's picture

ELECTRIC-BLUE CLOUDS OVER ANTARCTICA: A vast bank of electric-blue clouds has appeared over the south pole, signaling the start of the season for southern noctilucent clouds. According to data from NASA's AIM spacecraft, the clouds appeared earlier than usual this year. Researchers say this could be a sign of climate change: full story.

M-CLASS SOLAR FLARE: For more than two weeks, solar activity has been low. Hours ago, a new sunspot broke the quiet with an M3.5-class solar flare. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the extreme ultraviolet flash at 23:16 UT on Dec. 19th:

Radiation from the flare produced a brief wave of ionization in the upper atmosphere over the Pacific side of Earth. Otherwise, the blast was not particularly geoeffective. It did not produce an Earth-directed CME.

Shiveluch volcano, Kamchatka: continuing lava dome growth, ash plumes to 27,000 ft

Silver's picture

By: Volcanodiscovery.com, 12/18/2013

http://images.volcanodiscovery.com/uploads/pics/shiveluch_volcano_sat.jpg

Several ash plumes up to altitudes of 27,000 ft (8 km) altitude were spotted by VAAC Tokyo during the past 24 hours, indicating that activity at the growing lava dome in form of explosions and/or avalanches/pyroclastic flows remains elevated.
