Iago Spreads Snow from South to Mid-Atlantic

Snow Totals So Far

Winter Storm Iago will continue to spread both snow and rain across the South and into the Mid-Atlantic Thursday evening into early Friday.

Iago dumped up to 4 inches of snow in central Mississippi on Thursday morning. Portions of northern Alabama received 1 to 3 inches of snow on Thursday afternoon accompanied by isolated occurrences of thunder and lightning. Up to a foot or more of snow was reported in the mountains of southwest Virginia on Thursday evening.

Two Coronal Mass Ejections (CME’s) are expected to impact the earth in the next 24 hours and a G1-Class Geomagnetic storm will be possible shortly after. Monsoon to spell end to Australian heatwave

IT'S going to get worse before it gets better but Australia's heatwave is set to subside with the overdue arrival on the monsoon season in the top end.

Friday is forecast to bring extreme temperatures, strong winds and dangerous fire conditions ahead of a much anticipated cool change on the weekend.

Athena, Brutus, Caesar ... all are mythical characters in Greek mythology. Thanks to The Weather Channel, those names have become much more this winter season. The cable channel — home of weather stud Jim Cantore and weather geeks everywhere — was in its element recently as a winter storm barreled through Ohio.

But this wasn’t just any winter storm. We know the name for our wintry attacker, thanks to a new policy in which major winter storms receive names, just as hurricanes have been named for decades.

Midday downpour was as white as snow but hard as rocks

A convertible’s canvas roof wrecked by precipitation.

Parts of Malta’s landscape yesterday looked like something out of a Christmas postcard as an accumulation of hail blanketed the roads and fields.

Excited children donned their boots and gloves and gleefully rushed outdoors to play and snap photos in the snow-like surroundings. Some schools took a break to allow pupils to experience the unusual moment.

Mystery light flashes through Winnipeg sky

Flash may have come from Manitoba Hydro station, or it could have been lightning

A sudden flash of light that appeared in the night sky in Winnipeg on Tuesday remains a mystery, but it might not have been an otherworldly phenomenon as previously thought.

Many Winnipeggers reported seeing the whitish-green flash in the sky at around 10 p.m. CT Tuesday. It disappeared as suddenly as it appeared.

Warm Weather Slows Iditarod

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Unseasonably warm weather in parts of Alaska has complicated training for some mushers already signed up for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

It has also forced the cancellation of several qualifying races for future rookies of the famous 1,000-mile trek to Nome.

FRESNO, Calif. -- The freeze gripping the West appeared on the verge of easing Tuesday, but farmers who spent millions to protect crops were still assessing damage, some produce prices climbed, and businesses and residents dealt with burst pipes.

The National Weather Service predicted another frosty night, but said temperatures would begin to warm as high pressure moved east.
