An incredible swath of plasma erupted from the Sun on December 31st, 2012 over a four-hour period. NASA stated that a massive eruption on the surface of the Sun blasted out a wave of super-hot plasma so high that it could tower over 20 Earth. The length of the eruption extends about 257,495 kilometers (160,000 miles) out from the Sun. With Earth about 12,714 km (7,900 miles) in diameter, this relatively minor eruption is about 20 times the diameter of our planet. Magnetic forces drove the flow of plasma, but without sufficient force to overcome the sun’s gravity much of the plasma fell back into...

January 5, 2013 – ARGENTINA – A blistering heat wave, power outages and a fuel shortage added up Tuesday to a second day of hellish conditions in Greater Buenos Aires, home to about a quarter of Argentina’s 40 million people. Amid a plethora of recommendations by the authorities on how to deal with the soaring temperatures, which on Tuesday were expected to reach 36 C (97 F), people took refuge in any shade they could find to get out of the blazing heat of the Argentine summer. The National Meteorological Service renewed this Tuesday a high alert for the Argentine capital and its surrounding areas due to the high temperatures, which created scenes the total opposite of those seen these days in snowbound Europe and the United States.

Worst drought in decades hits Brazil's Northeast

(Reuters) - Brazil's Northeast is suffering its worst drought in decades, threatening hydro-power supplies in an area prone to blackouts and potentially slowing economic growth in one of the country's emerging agricultural frontiers.

Lack of rain has hurt corn and cotton crops, left cattle and goats to starve to death in dry pastures and wiped some 30 percent off sugar cane production in the region responsible for 10 percent of Brazil's cane output.

Bushfires are raging in many parts of Australia as the country experiences one of its most intense heatwaves in the last half century.

Some 80 percent of the country is in the grips of the heatwave, believed to have its origins in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Settled weather conditions, aided by significantly above-average water temperatures along the coast have fed exceptionally warm air across the continent.

"It's been the year when flooding became relevant to every part of the country. From the south-west to the north-east, every part of the country got hit," says Charles Tucker, chairman of the National Flood Forum, which represents more than 200 local community groups. "Flooding can now strike anywhere, and it needs to be recognised as the No 1 national emergency happening now."

Alaska has been experiencing a widespread cooling pattern for at least a decade, despite a trend of global warming climate. In the first decade since 2000, the state has cooled an average of -16.4°C (2.4 degrees Fahrenheit). Parts of Western Alaska saw temperatures drop a significant 4.5 °C for the decade. On the other side, has in fact warmed at twice the global average in the past 100 years, in line with trends noted throughout polar regions. Scientists from Alaska Climate Research Center, Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska analyzed the temperature change of the first decade of the 21st century for Alaska, both for annual and seasonal values,...

After a long period of quiet time the Sun has sent us a greetings card today. At 9:31 UTC on January 5, 2013 an M1.7 solar flare peaked from Region 1650. The event started at 9:26, peaked at 9:31 and ended at 9:34 UTC. As of early morning today Region 1650 has ’alpha’ magnetic configuration and is rotating into view off the southeast limb. Meanwhile, Region 1640 has developed a ‘beta-gamma-delta‘ magnetic field that harbors energy for X-class solar flares. We are up for some solar activity in the coming days. Active Regions on January 5, 2013 with magnetic configurations Global D Absorption some...
