A meteor shower may have been spotted in Southern California skies Wednesday night.

NBC4 viewers flooded the newsroom with phone calls of reported sightings of a meteor shower that looked like a "fireball" and "exploding stars" from as far as San Diego. The National Weather Service also received reports, starting at about 8 p.m.

"I saw it while I was driving," viewer AnnMarie said via Twitter. "I thought it was a firework!"

NBC4 received reports of sightings in Temecula, San Diego, Coachella Valley, Palmdale, Tustin, Ontario, Palm Springs, Brea, Malibu, Pomona, Chino, Redlands, Seal Beach, Fresno, Long Beach, Anaheim, San Bernardino and Los Angeles.

A viewer from Los Angeles sent a video of what he described as a fireball over a parking lot.

Typhoon Haiyan (local name Yolanda) continues to plow through the Philippines, bringing destruction to the islands along its path.

While interaction with the islands has caused Haiyan's winds to decrease from its peak of 315 kph (195 mph), it remains a powerful and dangerous typhoon as it moves over the western Philippines Friday night, local time.

In advance of the cyclone, nearly 750,000 people were evacuated according to the Associated Press. At least four people have been confirmed dead with more injured and missing.

CO2 injections likely culprit in Texas earthquakes –study

Silver's picture

Reuters, By: Reuters, 11/04/2013

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Carbon dioxide injected into oil and gas wells may have caused a series of minor earthquakes in Texas long before the adoption of current hydraulic fracking, according to a study published on Monday in a national science journal. The study, which analyzed 93 earthquakes that occurred between March 2009 and December 2010, appears to be the first to link earthquakes of magnitude 3 and above and carbon dioxide injections in the Cogdell oil field near Snyder, Texas.

Tremors in the area that occurred between 1975 and 1982 were previously linked to the injection of water into wells but the same explanation could not be applied to earthquakes that occurred in late 2000s, the paper's two authors said. "The timing of gas injection suggests it may have contributed to triggering the recent seismic activity," the study said. "If so, this represents an instance where gas injection has triggered earthquakes having magnitudes 3 and larger."

Volcanic activity worldwide 8 Nov 2013

Etna (Sicily, Italy): Explosions from the New SE crater continued over night and this morning, although their frequency and size has decreased. Tremor levels have remained essentially unchanged and are still low.

Yasur (Tanna Island, Vanuatu): Strong semi-continuous ash emissions and relatively strong strombolian explosions that eject large bombs outside the crater were reported by John Seach, a regular visitor to the volcano.
The ash falls damage vegetation near the volcano and some ash fall was reported from Erromango Island located 150 km north of Yasur. John mentions large lava bombs of 4 meters in diameter.

Momotombo (Nicaragua): A small seismic swarm occurred at the volcano today. A cluster of small earthquakes of magnitudes around 1 were detected on 6 Nov under the southern flan

Hubble Space Telescope Spots Strange Asteroid with 6 Tails of Dust

Silver's picture

By: Marcia Dunn, 11/08/2013

New Asteroid Spotted

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- This is one strange asteroid. The Hubble Space Telescope has discovered a six-tailed asteroid in the asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Scientists say they've never seen anything like it. Incredibly, the comet-like tails change shape as the asteroid sheds dust. The streams have occurred over several months.

A research team led by the University of California, Los Angeles, believes the asteroid, designated P/2013 P5, is rotating so much that its surface is flying apart. It's believed to be a fragment of a larger asteroid damaged in a collision 200 million years ago. Scientists using the Pan-STARRS telescope in Hawaii spotted the asteroid in August. Hubble picked out all the tails in September. The discovery is described in this week's issue of Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Jupiter at turning point of the year on November 7

Desert Gypsy's picture

Earthsky.org, 11/7/13, Larry Sessions

Moon and venus

If you stay up until mid-evening on November 7 – or get up before sunrise on November 8 – you can catch the dazzling planet Jupiter at a turning point in the year. Jupiter is said to appear stationary in front of the constellation Gemini the Twins, beginning on November 7, as it begins its retrograde motion in front of the stars. In astronomy, the start of retrograde motion of an outer planet like Jupiter always means the planet is soon to be at its best in our sky, in this case in early 2014. It happens when that planet seems to stop and then change its normal eastward direction of motion in front of the background stars.

~ Space Weather Update~ Continued M Class Flares~BIG SUNSPOT FACES EARTH

Lia's picture

BIG SUNSPOT FACES EARTH: AR1890, one of the biggest sunspots of the current solar cycle, has turned almost directly toward Earth. This raises the possibility of geoeffective eruptions in the days ahead. NOAA forecasters estimate a 45% chance of M-class flares and a 10% chance of X-flares on Nov. 7th. Solar flare alerts: text, voice.

RACING TOWARD THE SUN: Comet ISON is now inside the orbit of Earth and racing toward the sun. Last night, astronomer Alberto Quijano Vodniza of Pasto, Colombia, recorded the comet moving through space at 103,000 mph (46 km/s). Click to set the scene in motion:

"The movie shows the comet's motion over 27 minutes," says Vodniza. Watch it again. "We also caught a satellite."

On Nov. 28th, Comet ISON will fly through the sun's atmosphere little more than a million kilometers above the sun's fiery surface. This raises a question: Is Comet ISON racing toward its doom? Astronomer Matthew Knight of the Lowell Observatory thinks the comet might withstand the heat:

The western Pacific storm Haiyan has intensified without interruption since Sunday and is now a dangerous Category 5 super typhoon, with maximum sustained winds exceeding 160 mph.  It is on a path due west, and landfall Friday in the central Philippines is inevitable.

Haiyan – known as Yolanda in the Philippines – is likely the strongest storm to form on the planet this year.
