Draconid Meteor Shower Lights Up The Night Monday, Tuesday: Watch For Dragon's Breath

draco

Tonight, Draco will breathe a little fire in the sky. It’s time again for the Draconids, the meteor shower that appears to spew from the dragon-shaped constellation. Meteors should be visible starting at nightfall in the northern latitudes on Monday and Tuesday night – but only if you manage to get away from the lights of a city. The Draconids’ real origin point is the comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner. The comet is partially named after the French astronomer Michel Giacobini, who first discovered the comet in 1900; in his honor, the meteor shower is sometimes referred to as the Giacobinids. The comet makes one circuit of its orbit – which takes it out past Jupiter -- every 6.6 years. When Earth passes through the material left in its wake, the debris falls through our atmosphere as burning meteors.

Fuego volcano (Guatemala): increase in explosions and lava flow activity

MomT's picture

Volcano Discovery Monday Oct 07, 2013 15:56 PM | BY: T

Seismic signal showing the increase of Fuego's activity this morning

In the past hours, activity has increased and might be heading towards another paroxysm. The frequency and size of explosions rose significantly and has been creating an ash plume about 1 km high and drifting 8 miles south and southwest. Many of the explosions generate shock waves, rattling roofs and windows of houses in the villages Panimaché, Morelia and Panimaché II.
Constant degassing produces locomotive-like sounds and incandescent material ejected from strombolian activity reaches 125-200 m height and produces avalanches on the upper slopes. The lava effusion increased as well starting at 05:15 local time, and the flow towards Trinidad canyon reaches now 400 meters in length, generating avalanches. A second flow has started to move towards Ceniza canyon and avalanches from it reach 800 m length.

Typhoon Fitow Slams Okinawa on Way to China Followed by Danas

OdiStar's picture

Bloomberg - by Jae Hur - October 6, 2013

Winds gusting to 55 meters per second (125 miles per hour) halted air traffic and caused power outages on Okinawa’s Miyakojima island as Typhoon Fitow blew through on course for northern Taiwan and China’s coast, with a second storm following close behind.

Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau hoisted a typhoon warning as Fitow neared the island’s north coast today, while Chinese maritime authorities issued red alerts, the highest level, for storm tides and waves, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Fitow was heading west-northwest at about 20 kilometers per hour, some 220 miles (350 kilometers) north of Taipei at 1 p.m. Japan time, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported. Its central atmospheric pressure was 960 hectopascals with maximum sustained winds of 40 meters per second.

~ Space Weather Update~ FARSIDE CORONAL MASS EJECTION

Lia's picture

JUNO SPACECRAFT TO FLY BY EARTH: Here's some news you might not hear from NASA because, like much of the US government, the space agency is closed. NASA's Juno spacecraft will slingshot past Earth on October 9th for a velocity boost en route to Jupiter. At closest approach the spacecraft will be only 347 miles from Earth as it gains an extra 16,000 mph for the long journey ahead. Update: During the flyby, Juno's science instruments will sample the Earth environment--a practice run for data-taking at Jupiter years from now. Fortunately, commands to activate Juno's sensors were uploaded before the shutdown. The science experiment can proceed. Radio amateurs are encouraged to beam a message to Juno during the flyby. Juno will be listening.

FARSIDE CORONAL MASS EJECTION: The Earthside of the sun is quiet, but the farside of the sun is not. During the early hours of Oct. 5th, NASA's STEREO-A probe, stationed over the farside, recorded the eruption of a southern hemisphere sunspot. Shortly after 07:30 UT, a coronal mass ejection (CME) flew over the sun's southeastern limb (credit: SOHO):

Explosion from Sakurajima this morning (MBC webcam, from East)

Sakurajima (Kyushu, Japan): A moderately large explosion occurred this morning at 12:03 local time, possibly generating a pyroclastic flow to the SW side of the Showa crater. An ash plume rose to 13,000 ft (4 km) altitude and drifted over the southern part of Kagoshima city, where ash fall occurred.
A similar explosion had already occurred the night before (at 04:33 local time)
