Yet another meteor shot across the southern sky this weekend over the Lone Star State, according to multiple eye witness reports. The American Meteor Society (AMS) has now received 76 reports stretching from as far north as Meridian, Oklahoma to as far south as San Antonio, Texas.

The meteor, which appeared as a green fireball, shot through the sky on Saturday night (Sept. 21) at around 9 PM CST. Witnesses from all over Texas, including Abilene, Austin, the DFW metroplex, Houston, and Waco reported seeing the fireball. The AMS say meteors enter the Earth’s atmosphere regularly, but often arrive in the daytime, in uninhabited areas, or even during times of bad weather, meaning many go unseen.

QUIET SUNSPOTS: Near the center of the solar disk, growing sunspot AR1850 directly faces Earth. However, like all the other spots on the sun today, AR1850 is quiet and not flaring. The chance of a geoeffective flare today is low. Solar flare alerts: text, voice.

MAGNETIC ERUPTION: A filament of magnetism curling over the sun's northeastern limb erupted on Sept. 24th around 20:30 UT. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory caught the structure hurling part of itself into space:

Watch the movie and pay attention to the base of the explosion. A "canyon of fire" forms as the filament cuts through the sun's lower atmosphere. The glowing walls of the canyon trace the original channel where the filament was suspended by magnetic forces above the stellar surface.

Reuters) - A major earthquake hit a remote part of western Pakistan on Tuesday, killing at least 45 people and prompting a new island to rise from the sea just off the country's southern coast.

Tremors were felt as far away as the Indian capital of New Delhi, hundreds of miles (kilometers) to the east, where buildings shook, as well as the sprawling port city of Karachi in Pakistan

The most recent observations indicate Comet ISON is on track to hopefully (but not definitely) reach naked-eye visibility in December 2013's pre-dawn sky. S&T Senior Editor Alan MacRobert explains just why it's so tricky to predict how bright ISON will be, and previews what you'll need to know to spot it as it approaches the Sun for its close encounter.

These before-and-after photos of the catastrophic flooding that wreaked havoc in Colorado, affecting at least 1,918 square miles of the state and resulting in the likely deaths of 10 people and nearly $2 billion in property damage, offer a glimpse into the scope of devastation that this 1000-year storm brought down some Colorado communities.

HuffPost matched high-resolution satellite images of flooded areas from DigitalGlobe via Getty Images with high definition photos of those same flooded regions on Google Earth. Use the slider bar on each image to see the before and after photos of the affected region

Rainfall Redistribution Will Make Some Areas Warmer And Drier

Desert Gypsy's picture

Redorbit.com - 9/24/13

A new study from Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory reveals that a northward shift of Earth’s wind and rain belts could make a broad swath of regions drier. The findings, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, show that these drier regions include the Middle East, American West and Amazonia, while Monsoon Asia and equatorial Africa will become wetter as humans continue to heat the planet.

This new prediction is based on the warming that ended the last ice age around 15,000 years ago. During that warming, the North Atlantic Ocean began to churn more vigorously, melting Arctic sea ice, and setting up a temperature contrast with the southern hemisphere where sea ice was expanding around Antarctica. The tropical rain belt and mid-latitude jet stream were pushed north by the temperature gradient between the poles. This redistributed water in two bands around the planet.

Etna volcano current activity: ash emissions from New SE crater

Volcano Discovery Update Sun 22 Sep 21:27

Sporadic small ash emissions have reappeared from the New SE crater during the past days, although weather conditions did not often allow direct observation. Since about 4 days ago, tremor has been showing a slowly rising trend, although it is still at low levels.
