Ego Makes Great Promises

God said:

How beautiful is life when ego puts himself away. Who needs ego? Ego perturbs and disturbs. Ego is like a dunce. Time and time again ego forgets caution. Ego is a coyote who is proud of himself and his wily tricks while ego leaves you holding the bag to your regret.

Do not take other people’s ego in a reproving way while you hold up your ego as a paragon of virtue, much like an old-fashioned moral Western sheriff, bound and determined to be a high moral self-righteous sheriff and catch out all the bad guys.

Even bad guys are good guys to somebody. Everyone was a baby once. Everyone was innocent once.

Here’s the thing. Ego doesn’t love. Ego smirks. Ego is a know-it-all. Ego plays an unkind game. Ego isn’t really your ego, you understand. Ego pushes his way in and wants you to believe that he is your protector and vital to you. Ego inserts himself. Beloveds, ego is the bad guy. He misrepresents himself. Ego may be sincere, yet ego is not honest. Ego reverses. Ego is a kind of “if only” guy.

Ego suggests:

“If only so and so were more polite, then you could be happier. As it is, how can you be happier when so and so doesn’t admire you or, worse, is so absurd as to think ill of you. I, ego, will help you come into your rightful place in the world. I will help you to be respected as you should be. I will see that this errant thinker honors you, esteems you, regards you, even worships you. He is preposterous. I will see that this ruiner of your happiness no longer dares to find you wanting. He will find himself wanting. He will find himself good and wanting. I will ravish him for your sake. Give me the word.”

Ego hasn’t worked yet, yet every time you fall for ego’s swagger, swelled head, and big talk. Ego does not work on your behalf. Ego likes to stir things up. Ego can turn somersaults, and still he is of no good use to you at all. Ego is an anti-hero.

The fact is that ego is a rabble-rouser, a trouble-maker, a flim-flam. I will say this for ego:

Ego makes good promises.

However, ego doesn’t make good on his promises. Of course not. He’s not capable. And, besides, if he did make good, he would strew greater unhappiness in his wake. He would deliver blows to his satisfaction. You don’t even want what your ego boasts that he will deliver. Ego can only deliver heartache. Ego is good at that. Ego is a natural.

Ego can only cheat, lie and steal. He will take away someone else’s good name and besmirch yours. He will see that your conscience bothers you, and you will avert your eyes. Let’s face it. Ego is simply not good company for you. Get rid of him.

Ego is forceful, no doubt of that. He causes battles. Do you really want to be a warrior? Do you really want to be a bully who always gets his way? Do you really want to come from a loaded deck?

Choose between ego and Me. There is not room for the both of us on this planet. I exist. You and I exist. We exist as one. Ego is contrary to us. There is pretense in the world, and ego is one of the pretenders. He is one of the best pretenders. However, he can get away with his diversions for only so long.

No one follows ego for the long haul. Ego knows just when to pull out of his fractious campaign and leave you high and dry. You will take the fall for ego. Ego gets out while the going is good. He will be nowhere to be found, yet you may be sure he will surface somewhere on the sidelines laughing with glee. Indeed, he makes a difference in the world. He wreaks havoc, and ducks out of the fray.

If you found ego and confronted him, ego might well say:

“Who? Me?”

He will never admit his duplicity. And, you keep believing ego. That is, for a time you do, and then you take the rap for him.
