New Moon In Cancer: Expressing Ourselves With Greater Sensitivity

We are having a New Moon in Cancer on June 23rd/24th, depending on your location. New Moons are the beginning of a new wave of energy influencing the upcoming month. However, the astrological configurations at this time have a stronger influence over the following two weeks.

Neptune recently went retrograde, on June 16th, and this will last until November 22nd. It is in retrograde motion roughly 40% of the time, and generally, throughout the bulk of its duration, its effects aren’t as direct as the retrogrades of Mercury, Venus, and Mars. Rather, its effects are felt most strongly during the transitional period — which we are currently in — as the planet slows down and changes motion.

In recent weeks you may have been pulled back into something Neptune-related to help you shift the way you express its energies to serve your personal growth and development. Now is a time to consider how you will work with this planet, which could require some sort of action, revisitation, or reflection.

Neptune is the planet of compassion. It also rules over dreams, psychic receptivity, imagination, inspired creativity, and divinity. It is our connection to subtle energy and the spiritual realms. It is magical and etheric. As the higher octave of Venus, it could even represent soulmates for some people. Neptune has dominion over visual arts such as film and photography, but can also represent dance, music, and poetry.

Negatively expressed, it is associated with illusions, delusions, flakiness, and deceptions. It could be fantasizing about something or a relationship and not seeing things for what they really are. It can make us unrealistic, confused, and ungrounded. It also rules avoidance, escapism, addictions, drugs, and alcohol.

Cancer: Emotional, Nurturing, Domestic, Protective

This New Moon occurs a few days after the Sun entered Cancer, which always happens on the Solstice, when the Sun’s rays are directly over the Tropic of Cancer. The twelve-sign zodiac that we use is divided based on the relationship between the Earth and the Sun’s rays. The December Solstice occurs when the Sun is aligned with the Tropic of Capricorn and the Equinoxes occur when it is aligned with the Equator, which is where Aries and Libra are initiated.

Cancer is associated with nurturing, emotional bonding, vulnerability, and security. It is about family, comforts, and domestic life, and can be very protective with all of those things. Being ruled by the Moon, it is the most emotionally fluctuating sign. Symbolized by the Crab, Cancer feels most comfortable in its “shell,” which can be the home or whatever one is most familiar and comfortable with.

New Moon Conjunct Mercury in the Same Sign, Venus Trine Pluto

Mercury, the planet of the mind and communication, entered Cancer a few days before this New Moon and is also aligned with it. The next few weeks will be a period of communicating with feeling and sensitivity. We may be more thoughtful and emotionally considerate in the way we express our words to others. Our minds may be more focused on the way things make us feel.

At the time of this New Moon, Venus is in a tight trine to Pluto, which will be exact just under six hours afterward. It will be strongest during the days around the New Moon, but will still be relevant for the whole month. For some people, this can be a great or even empowering time for finances or regarding the value of something in our lives. We may experience a deepening in our relationships, whether in our love life or with our friendships. Love can be passionate, transforming, and regenerating.

Mercury Conjunct Mars in Aspect to Neptune and Jupiter, Then Opposing Pluto

Mercury is moving toward Mars, which is also in Cancer, and in the lead-up to this alignment, between June 25th-28th, they will both be interacting with Neptune and Jupiter. Neptune involved can make this a highly intuitive time and great for directing our thoughts and our actions toward anything creative, compassionate, selfless, or spiritual. We may feel more inspired and need to act on what we have been imagining.

However, with Jupiter also involved in a square, we may overdo or overextend ourselves while losing focus. We can more easily overlook details and be impractical, and so will need to be cautious of that. The combined influence of Jupiter and Neptune is good for anything that involves marketing, promotion, or spirituality.

Mercury makes an exact conjunction with Mars on June 28th, while they are both moving toward an opposition with Pluto. We may feel more mentally energetic but can also be irritable and combative with our words. Our minds can more impulsive and we need to be cautious when making decisions.

On June 29th, Mercury makes its exact opposition to Pluto with Mars following closely behind it. Our thinking can become obsessive and we may feel the need to get to the bottom of something. There could be some conflicts, perhaps around hidden matters. This energy could even manifest as power struggles and oppositions toward actions. This energy gets the most intense around July 2nd-3rd, when Mars is exactly opposite Pluto.

Making Intentions and Things To Consider

Do you need to connect with others with more feeling, sensitivity, and compassion? Do you need to be more nurturing? How can you need to deepen your relationships and the way you express love? In what ways can you be applying your thoughts and actions towards your creative aspirations, dreams, and wishes? Do you need to act on your intuition more?

These are some examples of what your New Moon intentions can revolve around, but they can also be related to other Taurus themes mentioned in this article, or perhaps other things that come up. The exact time of this New Moon will be at 2:31am Universal Time on June 24th which will be the night of the 23rd in the Americas. You can click here to find out what that is in your time zone.

It is best to make your intentions as close to the New Moon is possible, but they can even be done within the first 24 hours following. However, the best time for making intentions would be within the first half hour following or just prior.
