Region 1532 erupted with M2.7 solar flare

On July 27, 2012 emerging Region 1532 unleashed an M-class solar flare. This latest event started at 17:17 and peaked at 17:26 UTC as M2.7 solar flare. It does not look like it produced a substantial CME and even if it did it was not Earth directed.
A Type IV radiation was recorded.

A huge outbreak of severe thunderstorms hit United States on Thursday, July 26, 2012 causing damage in fifteen states and knocking out power to over 250,000 customers. Severe thunderstorm warnings were in effect for 132 counties in 15 states along but it was not as nearly as violent as the June 29 – 30 Mid-Atlantic and Midwest derecho. It can be, however, classifed as a derecho, since it met the main criteria, as defined by NOAA’s SPC.
“A derecho is a widespread, long-lived wind storm that is associated with a band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms. Although a derecho can produce destruction similar to that of tornadoes, the damage typically is directed in one direction along a relatively straight swath. As a result, the term “straight-line wind damage” sometimes is used to describe derecho damage. By definition, if the wind damage swath extends more than 240 miles (about 400 kilometers) and includes wind gusts of at least 58 mph (93 km/h) or greater along most of its length, then the event may be classified as a derecho.”
Three people were reportedly killed. The severe storms covered an unusually large area, erupting along a 1,500-mile long swath of the country from Texas to Connecticut.
Tropical plankton invades Arctic waters

Scientists have identified tropical and subtropical species of marine protozoa living in the Arctic Ocean for the first time. It looks like they traveled thousands of miles on Atlantic currents and ended up above Norway with an unusual-but naturally cyclic-pulse of warm water. Researchers point that it is not a direct result of overall warming climate. However, arctic waters are warming rapidly and such pulses are predicted to grow as global climate change causes shifts in long-distance currents.
The creatures in question are radiolaria-microscopic one-celled plankton that envelope themselves in ornate glassy shells and graze on marine algae, bacteria and other tiny prey. Radiolaria live only about a month, so it must have taken 80-some generations for some species to make the five- to seven-year trip. On the way, successive generations could have adapted to colder waters. The exotic creatures could offer a preview of climate-induced changes already overtaking the oceans and land, causingredistributions of species and shifts in ecology.
Region of U.S. drought triples in size in one week
July 28, 2012 – MIDWEST – The U.S. Drought Monitor reported a nearly threefold increase in areas of extreme drought over the past week in the nine Midwestern states where three quarters of the country’s corn and soybean crops are produced. “That expansion of D3 or extreme conditions intensified quite rapidly and we went from 11.9 percent to 28.9 percent in just one week,” Brian Fuchs, a climatologist and Drought Monitor author, told AFP. “For myself, studying drought, that’s rapid. We’ve seen a lot of things developing with this drought that were unprecedented, especially the speed.” Almost two thirds of the continental United States are now suffering drought conditions, the largest area recorded since the Drought Monitor project started in 1999. “If you are following the grain prices here in the U.S., they are reflecting the anticipated shortages with a price increase,” Fuchs said. “It’s anticipated that this drought is going to persist through the next couple of months at least and conditions are not overly favorable to see any widespread improvement.” President Barack Obama’s administration has opened up protected US land to help farmers and ranchers hit by the drought and encouraged crop insurance companies to forgo charging interest for a month. Officials have said the drought will drive up food prices since 78 percent of US corn and 11 percent of soybean crops have been hit and the United States is the world’s biggest producer of those crops. The current drought has been compared to a 1988 crisis that cut production by 20 percent and cost the economy tens of billions of dollars. -Physics

From highways in Texas to nuclear power plants in Illinois, the concrete, steel and sophisticated engineering that undergird the nation's infrastructure are being taxed to worrisome degrees by heat, drought and vicious storms.
On a single day this month here, a US Airways regional jet became stuck in asphalt that had softened in 100-degree temperatures, and a subway train derailed after the heat stretched the track so far that it kinked - inserting a sharp angle into a stretch that was supposed to be straight. In East Texas, heat and drought have had a startling effect on the clay-rich soils under highways, which "just shrink like crazy," leading to "horrendous cracking," said Tom Scullion, senior research engineer with the Texas Transportation Institute at Texas A&M University. In Northeastern and Midwestern states, he said, unusually high heat is causing highway sections to expand beyond their design limits, press against each other and "pop up," creating jarring and even hazardous speed bumps.

In the early spring of 2012, U.S. farmers were on their way to planting some 96 million acres in corn, the most in 75 years. A warm early spring got the crop off to a great start. Analysts were predicting the largest corn harvest on record.
The U.S. is the leading producer and exporter of corn, the world's feedgrain. At home, corn accounts for four-fifths of the U.S. grain harvest. Internationally, the U.S. corn crop exceeds China's rice and wheat harvests combined. Among the big three grains - corn, wheat and rice - corn is now the leader, with production well above that of wheat and nearly double that of rice.
The corn plant is as sensitive as it is productive. Thirsty and fast-growing, it is vulnerable to both extreme heat and drought. At elevated temperatures, the corn plant, which is normally so productive, goes into thermal shock.
As spring turned into summer, the thermometer began to rise across the Corn Belt. In St. Louis, Missouri, in the southern Corn Belt, the temperature in late June and early July climbed to 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher 10 days in a row. For the past several weeks, the Corn Belt has been blanketed with dehydrating heat.
Arizona 'Haboob' Dust Storm Hits Phoenix Area

Yes, the name sounds a little crazy, but the term often associated with a major dust storm in an arid region is called a haboob. It's Arabic for "strong wind" and is something people living in Arizona and the Phoenix area are becoming used to.
The massive Arizona dust storm slammed into the Phoenix area on Saturday July 21st, 2012. The dust storm was relentless with extremely strong winds knocking out power to over 9,000 customers as reported by the Tucson Citzen. Other areas close by effected by the dust storm were Mesa, Scottsdale, Gilbert, Apache Junction, Santan Valley, Chandler and Casa Grande.
The winds reached gusts as high as 45mph throughout the Phoenix area. Some drivers had to pull of off the road due to zero visibility situations from the thick cloud of dust spreading across the city. Some area residents reported damages to roofs and vehicles. One resident of the Tempe area shared a video on YouTube that you can watch below that showed their roof being nearly ripped off.

Floods in North Korea kill 88 and devastate huge swathes of farmland
July 28, 2012 – NORTH KOREA – Flooding across impoverished North Korea this month has killed 88 people, left tens of thousands homeless and devastated swathes of farmland. A week of floods “caused by typhoon and downpour … claimed big human and material losses,” Pyongyang’s official news agency said. The new death toll was a dramatic increase from the figure of eight reported Wednesday. A total of 134 people were injured and almost 63,000 people were left homeless by the floods, which started on July 18, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported, with thousands of houses damaged or destroyed. The biggest loss of human life was in two counties of South Pyongan province, which were hit by torrential rains on Monday and Tuesday, it said. More than 30,000 hectares of land for growing crops was “washed away and buried” or “submerged,” KCNA said, a potential blow for a state that is beset by persistent severe food shortages. With rugged terrain and outmoded agricultural practices, the country faces serious difficulties in feeding its 24 million people. Hundreds of thousands died during a famine in the mid to late-1990s. UN agencies, after a visit to the North, estimated last November that three million people would need food aid in 2012. Some 300 public buildings and 60 factories were damaged in the floods, as well as large stretches of road, KCNA said. State media reported earlier this week that 60 flood victims were rescued thanks to a helicopter urgently sent by leader Kim Jong-Un. The victims, including children and women, were trapped on Monday on a hillock in the northwest of the country after a river flooded due to heavy rain, the official news agency said. “Isolated incommunicado, they did not find a way out, in panic at rising water. At that time a helicopter appeared,” it said. “After receiving an urgent report, the dear respected Kim Jong-Un issued an emergency sortie order to a unit of the Air Force of the Korean People’s Army.” After decades of deforestation, the impoverished North Korea is particularly vulnerable to flooding. Dozens were killed or injured by a storm and torrential rain in the North in June and July last year. Thousands were also made homeless and large areas of farmland were flooded. –Herald Sun
Geyser may be coming back to life on New Zealand’s North Island after 43 years
July 28, 2012 – NEW ZEALAND - A long forgotten geothermal spectacle on New Zealand’s North Island could be coming back to life after more than 40 years, scientists said. In the first half of the 20th century the Waikite Geyser in the Whakarewarewa geothermal area near Rotorua was known for its spectacular hot water eruptions reaching up to 65 feet but had not produced a significant eruption since 1969, the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences said. However, in the past year scientists have increasingly noticed geothermal waters coming into the throat of the geyser, a major tourist attraction, the official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported. Geothermal features like geysers can be naturally variable and stay dormant for years, GNS geothermal scientist Ed Mroczek said in a statement. “This makes it difficult to distinguish what is part of a natural cycle and what is disruption caused by human activity,” he said. Scientists say they believe a sharp increase in the number of bores drilled in Rotorua since the 1950s by homeowners and businesses seeking cheap energy caused underground pressures to drop. But new research at Whakarewarewa suggests pressure has increased and water from deeper in the earth was being pushed toward the surface, scientists said. “We have no way of knowing if Waikite will recover to its former magnificence, but the signs we are seeing are very encouraging,” Mroczek said. –Terra Daily
Popocatepetl rumbles again with gas emissions and glowing lava

On July 26th 2012, CENAPRED has reported that in the last 24 hours the monitoring system of Popocatépetl volcano registered 5 low intensity exhalations accompanied by steam, gas and probably by small amounts of ash. Ten volcano tectonics events of low magnitude have also been registered. Additionally, some episodes of high frequency spasmodic tremor of low amplitude were detected, adding up to nearly 25 minutes.
During most of the day, the volcano could not be seen due to dense clouds. It was possible to observe incandescence over the crater rim during the night of July 25th. During the morning of July 26th the volcano could be observed emitting a continuous steam and gas plume, reaching 1 km high and travelling towards southwest.
