Are you comfortable with silence? Could you sit in a restaurant with friends and not say a word, without feeling awkward? We talk all the time but we are not always saying anything of value. Sometimes we just talk because we think remaining silent is a bad thing. We fill up our day-to-day lives with noise, but do we ever take a break and just…be?

“Speak only if it improves upon the silence” – Mahatma Gandhi

Perhaps it would be wiser to talk less and say more. By immersing ourselves in moments of silence we can collect our thoughts and take a break from the noise. When our mind is quiet, we can think deeply and our inner voice is able to speak to us. It’s only in these precious moments do we experience our own divinity. There is a lot to learn from being still and quiet.

Aspects of our daily lives are filled to the brim with noise. The hectic commute to work, the never-ending list of things we still need to do and everything else in between. If we embrace our silence, perhaps we can alleviate some of our stress, even if it is just for a few moments. There is so much value and wisdom in being presence. We can learn so much about ourselves, as well as the world around us without the need to utter a single word.

There is a great amount of restraint and maturity involved in the exercise of silence. Although it might be challenging to keep our lips sealed, with practice we can learn to speak less and feel more.

Trust the silence

A lot of us don’t like to be alone, let alone be silent. Being left with our own thoughts can seem daunting. Sometimes we want to keep ourselves busy so that we don’t have to deal with our inner-emotions. By trusting the silence, you’ll realise that you have the freedom to dictate your thoughts. You are in control of how you think and feel. Let go and trust the silence.

Find silence in nature

Take some time to escape the hustle and bustle. Go for a walk in the park, swim in the ocean or watch the sunrise. Immerse yourself in nature and listen to the sounds all around you. There might not be Wi-Fi but you’re bound to find a better connection.

Silence is a healer

Silence is a great teacher. It can help you gain clarity, as well as resolve any conflicts. For example, you will be able forgive those that hurt you and develop compassion and unconditional love. Silence is a healer. With devotion and commitment, sustaining your silence will feel less like a challenge and more like a joyful routine.
