Tornadoes Tear Across Northern Japan; Dozens Injured

TOKYO  -- Tornadoes tore through eastern Japan on Monday, injuring dozens of people, at least one seriously, and destroying some buildings.

Police in Saitama prefecture, near Tokyo, said 63 people were reported injured. Details of their injuries were not immediately available.

A strong earthquake registered as M 6.0 (JMA) on Richter scale struck northeastern Japan on August 4, 2013 at 03:28 UTC. JMA reported depth of 50 km. This earthquake was 41 km away from March 11, 2011 devastating M 9.0 "Tohoku earthquake" and about 109 km away from crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant.

 

There was no risk of a tsunami, JMA said. Operator of crippled nuclear power plant Fukushima Dai-ichi said no problems were reported there or at another one of its nuclear plants in Fukushima. USGS measured magnitude 5.8 earthquake and depth of 46 km.

June 13, 2013 – JAPAN – After 10 days of almost no activity, the volcano has woken up violently with 3 powerful explosions last night (at 22:05 and 23:58 UTC, ash plumes to 10-13,000 ft) and this morning at 04:26. The eruption this morning appears to be one of the largest explosions for a long time, producing an ash plume rising to 16-20,000 ft (5-6 km) altitude. An SO2 plume is also visible on satellite data. Tokyo VAAC issued a warning of an ash plume drifting SE at flight level 200 (20,000 ft altitude), s. graphic.

Thousands of demonstrators have gathered in Tokyo to protest restarting of nuclear reactors the government is considering.

 

Around 7,500 people participated in the anti-nuclear protests in the Japanese capital, according to organizers cited by AFP. The demonstrators gathered in a park in central Tokyo, marched through the city and rallied outside the offices of Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO), operator of the Fukushima nuclear power plant which suffered meltdowns of three reactor cores following an earthquake and tsunami two years ago.

Japan cancels U.S. wheat order on GMO fear: report

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Japanese authorities have canceled a tender offer to buy wheat from the U.S., after unapproved genetically modified wheat was found in an Oregon field, Reuters reported on Thursday. Other major wheat importers South Korea, China and the Philippines also said they were monitoring the situation, after the find stirred concerns that the modified wheat could have made it to the marketplace, the report said.

5/30/2013 -- Volcano Sakurajima Erupts -- Large eruption of lava/ash in South Japan

This volcano never ceases to amaze! Its been a very long time since the last video the Japanese agency put out in regards to this volcano.

At one point during 2011 , this volcano erupted 10 times in one day !

Things have quieted down a bit there, but now we see this... reminiscent of 2011's activity. Large static discharge lightning flashes, along with several lava bombs, and a LOT of ash fallout.
