The heaviest snowfall in decades has left 3 dead and more than 800 injured across Japan, local media reports. The snow has paralyzed the public transport system causing numerous traffic accidents. One person died in a snow-related traffic accident in the city of Shizuoka located south of the capital Tokyo early on Saturday, police said. Another two people died in car crashes caused by snow in Shiga central Japan and Oita in the south western part of the archipelago on Friday, according to Kyodo news agency. At least 850 people, including one in a coma, have been injured on the snow-covered roads since the storm hit the country on Thursday, local broadcaster NHK reported.
This week's ice storm paralyzed parts of the South before dumping snow and ice up the East Coast, which snapped trees and utility poles and snarled traffic. At least 26 deaths in the South have been blamed on the storm. Fewer than 100,000 customers are still without power in Georgia, as power crews work to restore electricity in hard-hit east Georgia after Winter Storm Pax. Georgia Power reported that more than 40,000 of its customers were without power in east Georgia early Saturday, with many of them around the Augusta area.
Two people were killed Friday as high winds and huge waves battered Britain, adding more misery to coastal communities already hit by widespread flooding. One woman died in central London when part of a building collapsed on the minicab she was driving during a heavy windstorm. One cruise ship passenger also died after high winds kicked up giant waves in the English Channel. The army was also called in to rescue 30 people from a seafront restaurant in Hampshire southwest of London after high winds blew a shingle through its windows, allowing flood waters in. Officials said Saturday that 22 severe flood warnings are in place, meaning lives are in danger at those points. More heavy rain and winds are expected Saturday.
Another intense Atlantic storm is impacting Europe, bringing strong winds and torrential rain for areas already reeling from months of exceptionally terrible weather. Now, a famed river is flowing over its banks. The River Thames has burst its banks after reaching its highest level in years, flooding riverside towns upstream of London, the Associated Press reported. Residents and British troops had piled up sandbags to protect properties from the latest bout of flooding, but the river overwhelmed their defenses Monday, leaving areas including the center of the village of Datchet underwater.
If you live in the South, now is the time to prepare for another potentially disruptive winter storm. Winter Storm Pax will bring a long swath of ice and snow across the South through midweek, and the ice may accumulate enough in some areas to knock out power for thousands of people and litter roads with fallen tree limbs and downed wires. Travel will become difficult, if not impossible, in the hardest-hit areas. Pax may also impact the Middle Atlantic and Northeast with snow and ice later in the week.
After a powerful winter storm knocked out power for more than one million people in the Northeastern United States, hundreds of thousands remain in the dark as utility crews rush to restore electricity. Dubbed “Winter Storm Nika” by the Weather Channel, this was the second blizzard to strike the Northeast this week. Nika dropped more than a foot of snow in some areas, but it did the most damage by creating such thick layers of ice on trees and power lines that some residents are expected to go days without electricity.
Western Europe is picking up damage left behind by a series of storms that have lashed coastlines over the last week, and conditions aren't going to improve yet. "The latest in a series of potent storms will blast into western Europe late Friday into Saturday," said weather.com meteorologist Chris Dolce. "Rain and gusty winds will extend from Ireland and the United Kingdom to France and Spain."
Winter Storm Nika has spread a wintry mess of snow, sleet and freezing rain from the Plains to the Northeast. The storm also brought snow to the mountains of the West. Below are selected snow and ice totals from the storm by state in the northeastern, central and western regions as of early Wednesday afternoon. Note that due to varying report times and ongoing snowfall, additional snow may have fallen in some of the listed locations.
