A man clears snow on La Cumbre, some 30 km (18.6 miles) near La Paz, August 28, 2013. Unusually heavy snowfall has been reported on the highlands in Bolivia, according to local media

Approximately 250,000 alpacas have died as a result of the worst snowfall Peru has seen in a decade, and the unexpectedly intense blast of winter weather has claimed livestock and human life in other parts of South America as well.

A cold weather front from the Antarctic began to spread across South America earlier this week, with some regions devastated by the snowfall, and others reveling in it. Heavy snow fell upon a large swath of South America, from Peru and Bolivia in the northwest to Paraguay and Brazil in the southeast.

Weather.com, By: Liz Burlingame, 07/19/2013

A heat wave in England is being blamed for hundreds of premature deaths, and a wildfire warning has been issued as the mercury continues to rise. Research conducted for The Times by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine estimated the death toll for the first nine days of the heat wave as between 540 and 760 people in England alone.

"The excess is likely to have been overwhelmingly among the elderly, especially over 75, some of which may have been among people who would have died just a few weeks later if there had been no heat wave," Ben Armstrong, an epidemiological statistician, told Reuters.

"The problem here has been with the flooding from the swells that have come in from the south. So we have a situation with extremely dry drought up north, and extremely wet floods down south. Very weird weather."

The Epoch Times, 6/28/13, Associated Press

FOZ DO IGUAZU, Brazil—The majestic Iguazu Falls that straddle the border of Brazil and Argentina have been hit hard by rains that are keeping visitors from seeing the falls up close and leading officials to take measures to prevent flooding.

The amount of water flowing at one of South America’s biggest tourist destinations is now about 13 million liters (roughly 3,434,000 gallons) per second. That’s up from the roughly 1.5 million liters (roughly 396,000 gallons) per second two weeks ago, according to park administrators on the Brazilian side.
