Maranoa graziers running out of water

Maranoa Mayor Robert Loughnan says some graziers in Queensland's southern inland are struggling to water their stock, despite relatively green conditions.

 

The region has experienced several floods in recent years but a lack of rain has put the western side of the shire in the grip of an undeclared drought. Councillor Loughnan says most farmers have feed but are running out of water.

Wet start to May for Central Queensland

In the last 24 hours Central Queensland has copped a soaking with the rain set to ease inland but hang around on the coast. Persistent onshore winds associated with a weak trough have brought warm, moist air onto coastal regions. The result has been substantial rain to fall in parts of inland and coastal Central Queensland.

 

A significant amount of rain has fallen in Capricornia in the 24 hours till 9am Tuesday with 61 mm on the coast at Byfield, 42 mm at Samuel Hill Airport and 56 mm at the further inland Blackdown Tableland. This is the most rainfall in the area since March earlier this year and is especially significant for May which is normally a relatively drier month.

Beef producers want cattle donated to Indonesia

Organisers of a beef crisis summit in north Queensland today want to see 100,000 Australian cattle donated to Indonesia. Up to 500 graziers, as well as the state and federal agriculture ministers, are gathering for a meeting in Richmond to address the high Australian dollar, drought, high debt and the reduced cattle export industry.

 

Organiser Barry Hughes says one resolution is to make good with Indonesia after the live export suspension.

Lake learns lessons from Qld floods

The Mayor of Ipswich in south east Queensland says it is crucial local governments across the Hunter, and the rest of Australia, share their experiences of dealing with natural disasters. Paul Pisasale will speak at Lake Macquarie Council's second 'Our City, Our Future' lecture series tonight.

 

Ipswich was devastated by floods in 2011, which saw more than 3,000 homes and businesses inundated with water. Councilor Pisasale says he is proud of how his community pulled together during the natural disaster.

AgForce demands more drought policy reform details

Rural lobby group AgForce says the Federal Government's drought policy reforms need to be finalised quickly, with one-third of Queensland now in drought. All states and territories are signatories to the agreement, which includes farm household support payments and taxation measures.

 

AgForce general president Ian Burnett says assistance needs to be more than just helping producers prepare for drought.

Nights getting chillier in QLD and northeastern NSW

It was the coolest night last night since the end of last year for parts of Queensland and northeast New South Wales. Last night was the coolest night since October last year for Taree in NSW and at Winton in QLD, dropping to 7.1 degrees and 11.9 degrees respectively. It was also the coolest night since November in Ballina NSW (11.7 degrees) and Moranbah QLD (12.9 degrees).

 

This cool night was due to clear skies, allowing heat from the previous day to return back into the atmosphere and cooler air to replace it.

Possible late season cyclone for Queensland

The north tropical Queensland coast may be impacted by a late season tropical cyclone next week. A weak low has formed within a trough over the Solomon Sea. Over the next few days this low is expected to intensify and move slowly in a west-southwest direction, towards the eastern Cape York Peninsula coast. The Bureau of Meteorology are rating Monday as a high likelihood (that is, greater than 50% chance) of this system developing into a tropical cyclone.

 

Should a cyclone form it will be named Zane. Sea surface temperatures in the region are around 29 degrees which provides ample energy to fuel tropical cyclone formation and development.
