A Cancer Patient’s Best Friend

When I was growing up, my dream was to one day become a veterinarian. In fourth and fifth grade, I volunteered every day after school at a veterinarian’s clinic. I didn’t view it as an “internship” — in my mind, I was apprenticing for a certain future in the field. When I was 10, I asked for an incubator for Christmas. By spring, I was carting around a dozen baby chicks in my purple doll stroller. In middle school I walked dogs at the local animal shelter. But as I got older, there was college, summer travel, then my first real job, at a law firm in France. I was entering the “real world,” as they say in commencement speeches. And there was no room in my adult life for a dog.

UK MPs shocked over BBC 'complicity in tax avoidance'

Press TV - 10/6/12

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has been accused of complicity in tax avoidance for more than 25,000 of its employees.

The House of Commons Public Accounts Committee (PAC) said discovering the scale of fraud at the BBC was quite shocking as the corporation could not provide evidence that these individuals are paying the appropriate amount of tax.

“We were shocked to discover that the BBC has about 25,000 off-payroll contracts. Some 13,000 of these are for individuals who are on our screens and on the radio every day. They are the public face of the BB,” committee chairman Margaret Hodge said.

This long weekend skywatchers get to see the annual peak of the Draconid meteor shower. While not the most prolific cosmic fireworks show it reliably puts on a nice display and this year with the moon out of the way – sky conditions are set to be ideal.

Like other meteor showers the Draconids get their name from the constellation they appear to radiate out from in the sky – in this case Draco, the dragon – which appears nearly overhead around local midnight throughout the northern hemisphere. The constellation is the 8th largest in the entire sky and is so large that it wraps itself around the North Star, Polaris. Famous neigbouring constellations include Ursa Minor and Ursa Major – the small and great bears of mythology.
