The heaviest snowfall in decades has left 3 dead and more than 800 injured across Japan, local media reports. The snow has paralyzed the public transport system causing numerous traffic accidents. One person died in a snow-related traffic accident in the city of Shizuoka located south of the capital Tokyo early on Saturday, police said. Another two people died in car crashes caused by snow in Shiga central Japan and Oita in the south western part of the archipelago on Friday, according to Kyodo news agency. At least 850 people, including one in a coma, have been injured on the snow-covered roads since the storm hit the country on Thursday, local broadcaster NHK reported.

Georgia Power Outages Down to Fewer Than 100,000 Following Winter Storm Pax

By: Associated Press, 02/15/2014

This week's ice storm paralyzed parts of the South before dumping snow and ice up the East Coast, which snapped trees and utility poles and snarled traffic. At least 26 deaths in the South have been blamed on the storm. Fewer than 100,000 customers are still without power in Georgia, as power crews work to restore electricity in hard-hit east Georgia after Winter Storm Pax. Georgia Power reported that more than 40,000 of its customers were without power in east Georgia early Saturday, with many of them around the Augusta area.

Europe Storms 2014: 2 Killed After Another Storm Batters Britain

Silver's picture

By: Sean Breslin, 02/15/2014

Two people were killed Friday as high winds and huge waves battered Britain, adding more misery to coastal communities already hit by widespread flooding. One woman died in central London when part of a building collapsed on the minicab she was driving during a heavy windstorm. One cruise ship passenger also died after high winds kicked up giant waves in the English Channel. The army was also called in to rescue 30 people from a seafront restaurant in Hampshire southwest of London after high winds blew a shingle through its windows, allowing flood waters in. Officials said Saturday that 22 severe flood warnings are in place, meaning lives are in danger at those points. More heavy rain and winds are expected Saturday.

~Space Weather Update~Storm WARNING~SUNSPOT OF INTEREST

Lia's picture

Storm WARNING: As expected a "cannibal CME" hit Earth's magnetic field on Feb. 15th at 1300 UT. However, the impact did not spark a geomagnetic storm. Storming could still happen, though, as another CME is en route, due to arrive on Feb. 15-16. High-latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras. Aurora alerts: text, voice

SUNSPOT OF INTEREST: For the 4th day in a row, big sunspot AR1974 is crackling with M-class solar flares. So far, however, the active region has failed to produce a major eruption. Will this change? Click to view a 4-day movie of the sunspot's development--then scroll down for the probabilities:

The World’s Largest Solar Plant Started Creating Electricity Today

The Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System is now operational and delivering solar electricity to California customers. At full capacity, the facility’s trio of 450-foot high towers produces a gross total of 392 megawatts (MW) of solar power, enough electricity to provide 140,000 California homes with clean energy and avoid 400,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year, equal to removing 72,000 vehicles off the road.

Sprawling across a staggering 5 square miles of federal land near the California-Nevada border, it looks damn beautiful. Just look at these amazing images: Read More

~Spaceweather Update~INCOMING CMES COULD SPARK VALENTINE'S LIGHTS

Desert Gypsy's picture

Spaceweather.com - 2/13/14

SOLAR ACTIVITY: Solar activity is at moderately high levels as five M-class solar flares and multiple CMEs were observed over the past 24 hours. The primary source is active sunspot AR1974, which has a 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic field that harbors energy for strong explosions. NOAA forecasters estimate a 60% chance of M-flares and a 10% chance of X-flares on Feb. 13th. Solar flare alerts: text, voice

INCOMING CMES COULD SPARK VALENTINE'S LIGHTS: On Feb. 12th, an M-class exlosion in the magnetic canopy of sunspot AR1974 hurled a faint CME almost directly toward Earth. This SOHO coronagraph movie shows the cloud racing away from the sun:
