Greece: Aftermath of strong earthquake on Kefalonia island

Silver's picture

By: Euronews.com, 01/27/2014

Engineers began checking on Monday buildings on the island of Kefalonia (Cephalonia), which was rocked by a 5.9-Richter earthquake on Sunday afternoon. Experts from ministries, regional authorities and public organizations travelled to the Ionian island to inspect the damage done by the quake and the numerous aftershocks that followed.

The earthquake caused residents to run out of their homes, with many preferring not to return overnight. Employees at the island’s airport also refused to return to the building to complete check-in for a flight to Athens. Passengers’ documents were eventually checked outdoors.

~Space Weather Update~OLD SUNSPOT SET TO RETURN 2 M Class Flares

Lia's picture

OLD SUNSPOT SET TO RETURN: The southeastern limb of the sun is crackling with C- and M-class solar flares. These explosions herald the return of old sunspot AR1944, which produced many strong flares earlier this month. For the past two weeks AR1944 has been transiting the farside of the sun. An uptick in solar activity is possible as it returns to the Earthside this week. Solar flare alerts: text, voice

SPACE WEATHER BALLOON, LAUNCHED AND RECOVERED: Yesterday, the students of Earth to Sky Calculus launched a suborbital helium balloon from Bishop, California, and recovered the payload hours later from a nearby canyon. The goal of the mission was to measure high-energy radiation levels in the stratosphere. Those data are being reduced now. The students also captured panoramic images of California's epic drought:

One Of The Closest Supernovas To Earth Discovered By UCL Students

Silver's picture

By: MessageToEagle.com, 01/24/2014

One of the closest supernovas to Earth has been spotted in nearby galaxy Messier 82 (the Cigar Galaxy) by students and staff at UCL's teaching observatory, the University of London Observatory. The exploding star is located in nearby galaxy Messier 82 (the Cigar Galaxy), about 12 million light years away.

The discovery was a fluke - a 10 minute telescope workshop for undergraduate students that led to a global scramble to acquire confirming images and spectra of a supernova in one of the most unusual and interesting of our near-neighbor galaxies.

Study finds dangerous New Madrid fault ‘alive and active’

By: Theextinctionprotocol, 01/25/2014

January 25, 2014 – MISSOURI — The New Madrid fault zone in the nation’s midsection is active and could spawn future large earthquakes, scientists reported Thursday. It’s “not dead yet,” said U.S. Geological Survey seismologist Susan Hough, who was part of the study published online by the journal Science. Researchers have long debated just how much of a hazard New Madrid (MAD’-rihd) poses. The zone stretches 150 miles, crossing parts of Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee. In 1811 and 1812, it unleashed a trio of powerful jolts — measuring magnitudes 7.5 to 7.7 — that rattled the central Mississippi River valley.

~Space Weather Update~ Quiet Sun, Solar Wind Speed Increase

QUIET SUN: With no sunspots actively flaring, the sun's x-ray output has flatlined. Solar activity is low and likely to remain so for the rest of the weekend. Solar flare alerts: text, voice

SPACE WEATHER BALLOON LAUNCH TODAY: The students of Earth to Sky Calculus are only hours away from launching another space weather balloon. The launch, slated for midday Pacific time on Jan. 25th, is the latest in a series of suborbital balloon missions designed to study the effects of solar activity on Earth's upper atmosphere. Today's flight samples a period of low solar activity, the opposite of their previous flight, which flew into the teeth of an S2-class solar radiation storm. Here are the storm data they gathered on Jan. 8th:

~Space Weather Update~MOSTLY QUIET WITH A CHANCE OF FLARES

Lia's picture

MOSTLY QUIET WITH A CHANCE OF FLARES: With no sunspots actively flaring, solar activity is low. However, sunspots AR1957 and AR1959 could break the quiet. Both regions have 'beta-gamma' magnetic fields that harbor energy for medium-sized eruptions. NOAA forecasters estimate a 15% chance of M-class flares on Jan. 24th. Solar flare alerts: text, voice

NO CME, NO PROBLEM: A CME expected by forecasters to deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field on Jan. 23rd missed our planet. Arctic sky watchers got an eye-full anyway. Dennis Ball sends this picture of colors erupting last night over Bolungarvik, Iceland:

"After a day of horrid weather, the clouds parted at 9 PM and I grabbed by camera to photograph the auroras," says Ball. "By 10.30 PM the clouds had rolled in again, so I got an early night. It was an excellent start to my Iceland trip."
