Collapsed magnetic filament hurls coronal mass ejection (CME) towards Earth

February 11, 2013 – EARTH-DIRECTED ERUPTION: On Saturday, February 9th, around 0640 UT, a magnetic filament in the sun’s northern hemisphere erupted, hurling a coronal mass ejection (CME) toward Earth.

NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured the UV flash from the underlying C2-class solar flare: The CME, which was captured in flight by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, billowed away from the sun at 800 km/s. The bulk of the cloud looks like it will sail north of Earth. Nevertheless, a glancing blow is possible as shown in this 3D model of the CME prepared by analysts at the Goddard Space Flight Center. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras on Feb. 12th when the CME passes by. –Space Weather

Northeast digs out from blizzard: 9 dead, thousands without power

February 10, 2013 – BOSTON, MASS - The Northeast started digging itself out after a blizzard dumped up to 40 inches of snow with hurricane force winds, killing at least nine people and leaving hundreds of thousands without power. By early Sunday, utility companies were reporting roughly 350,000 customers still without electricity across a nine-state region after the wet, heavy snow brought down tree branches and power lines. About half a million had been down as of late Saturday. Air traffic began to return to normal Sunday after some 5,800 flights were canceled Friday and Saturday, according to Flightaware, a flight tracking service.

Peru, Chile and Bolivia hit by record floods, after heavy rain: 6 dead

February 10, 2013 – PERU - Torrential rain has been causing havoc along the Pacific coast side of South America, with flooding causing the deaths of at least six people in Peru. In the southern city of Arequipa, thousands of people were left without electricity and drinking water. In Chile, some four million people were hit by cuts to water supply blamed on landslides in San Jose de Maipo, 30 miles (48 km) south east of Santiago. The landslides contaminated two rivers supplying the capital’s water plants. The Aguas Andinas water company said it expected to bring the water supply back to normal by Sunday afternoon. Last week, even Chile’s Atacama Desert, one of the driest places in the world, suffered with heavy rain. In Peru, thousands of people have been left without electricity and drinking water. The authorities in Peru declared a state of emergency in Arequipa.

DALLAS/FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A line of fast-moving thunderstorms ripped across North Texas Sunday morning, prompting weather warnings and causing power outages and brief flash flooding.

There were no reports of widespread damage, but the National Weather Service reported a house near Luella in Grayson County suffered major damage, and in Sachse, lightning may have been to blame for a fire that destroyed a house there.

Winter Storm ‘Nemo’: A Historical Perspective

Rain's picture

Wunderground.com - 2/10/13, By Christopher C. Burt

Winter storm ‘Nemo’ (as The Weather Channel’ has designated it), winded up this Saturday night although sea-effect snow showers continue to brush Cape Cod and Nantucket Island in Massachusetts. The storm was certainly among the top five to affect Southern New England and Maine and for some localities, the worst winter storm on record (going back 300 years since European inhabitants began keeping track of such things).

A satellite image of Nemo Saturday morning around 7 a.m. EST. The amazing structure of the storm resembles a hurricane with an eye structure. This feature was also seen with Sandy last October and the ‘Perfect Storm’ of October 28, 1991. However, in Nemo’s case this was a pure winter storm, not a hybrid tropical cum extra-tropical storm like Sandy and the 1991 event although there have been other winter storms in the past that also displayed a similar ‘eye’ structure. Winter Storm Orko: Blizzard Conditions Possible in the Plains

Rain's picture

Weather.com - 2/10/13, Chris Dolce

Winter Alerts

Winter Storm Orko will deliver a swath of heavy snow and strong winds to the northern Plains and Upper Midwest Sunday. The southern end of the storm system associated with Orko will have the potential to bring severe thunderstorms and heavy rain to parts of the South.

Snow, High Winds for the Northern Plains/Upper Midwest

We expect Orko to dump snow totals of 6 to 12 inches, with local amounts over one foot, from portions of northern Nebraska to eastern South Dakota, eastern North Dakota, northern and central Minnesota, far northwest Wisconsin, and the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

A state-by-state look at how Winter Storm Nemo continues to impact the Northeast Sunday morning:

Connecticut

The storm dumped at as much as 3 feet of snow on Connecticut, paralyzing much of the state. The governor ordered all roads closed Saturday through midafternoon, and even emergency responders got stuck on highways.

Winter Storm Nemo laid down a swath of snow from the Upper Midwest to Maine.

Snow totals measured in feet are common in New England. Five states had locations that recorded 30" or more from Nemo (Conn., N.H., Mass., Maine, N.Y.). Hamden, Conn. came in with the top total of 40"!
