Lightning struck the St. Peter's Basilica Monday, hours after Pope Benedict XVI announced that he will resign as leader of the world's 1.1 billion Catholics on February 28. In this photo taken by Filippo Monteforte, the St. Peter's iconic dome received a direct hit from lightning during stormy weather.

When he became pope at age 78, Benedict XVI was already the oldest pontiff elected in nearly 300 years. He's now 85, and in recent years he has slowed down significantly, cutting back his foreign travel and limiting his audiences.

Significantly heavy rainfall has deluged the Southeast, creating dangerous flood conditions throughout Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.

The Dothan Eagle reports that numerous roads in the area are flooded or closed. Geneva County EMA Director, Margaret Mixon, states that several roads are "blown out", which implies that they are damaged to the point of being closed for a while.

 Commentary from Oomniscience

Dearest hearts,

Feeling very intense energies today, it feels like we have reached another pinnacle in our journey and are teeteering slightly.  Vertigo is also back again. Spirit guidance has shared that with the incoming plasma new foresight and inspiration have embraced our hearts and minds, allowing the warmth of the plasma wave to evaporate the waters of negative thinking and any remaining fear.

Sitting up straight, breathing deeply and letting the light of the solar fire to become an elixer of wisdom, a golden aura of divine love that surrounds us and fuels us with clear vision for the next steps...octaves...timelines..

infinite love...OMni

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Residents shaken by a tornado that mangled homes in Mississippi were waking up Monday to a day of removing trees, patching roofs and giving thanks for their survival. Dozens were injured.

Daylight also offered emergency management officials the chance to get a better handle on the damage that stretched across several counties. Gov. Phil Bryant planned to visit hard-hit Hattiesburg, where a twister moved along one of the city's main streets and damaged buildings at the governor's alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi. Emergency officials said early Monday that at least 63 people were injured in surrounding Forrest County and three were hurt to the west in Marion County, but they weren't aware of any deaths. At least 300 buildings were damaged.
