Approaching Comet C/2012 S1 "ISON" - Updates

Magikalspirit's picture

The Watchers- by Adonai on

Comet ISON is now 74 million km away from the Sun and 129 million km away from the Earth. It's closest approach to the Sun is on November 28, 2013 at 18:44 UTC.

It is still unclear what exploded from the ISON's core on November 14th but it created a spectacularly-long tail which is now more than 16 million kilometers. Take a look at its image taken by Michael Jäger on November 17th at SpaceWeather.

The animation below consists of 8 images, each a 3-image median combine stack, all with a r' filter, from 11:43 to 12:53 UTC, November 14, made by Bruce Gary using a Celestron 11-inch telescope. Filamentary structure can be seen moving away from the sun at high speed. The motion of jets that can be seen first on the side is backwards and toward the center of the tail.

Active volcano found hidden beneath Antarctic ice sheet

CBSNEWS / livescience.com Nov 18 2013

Earthquakes deep below West Antarctica reveal an active volcano hidden beneath the massive ice sheet, researchers said Sunday in a study published in the journal Nature Geoscience.

The discovery finally confirms long-held suspicions of volcanic activity concealed by the vast West Antarctic Ice Sheet. Several volcanoes poke up along the Antarctic coast and its offshore islands, such as Mount Erebus, but this is the first time anyone has caught magma in action far from the coast.

"This is really the golden age of discovery of the Antarctic continent," said Richard Aster, a co-author of the study and a seismologist at Colorado State University. "I think there's no question that there are more volcanic surprises beneath the ice."

Weak activity last evening from the New SE crater

Etna (Sicily, Italy): Activity has gradually decreased since the last paroxysm, with short peaks of renewed stronger activity in between. As of now, weak explosions probably still continue at the New SE crater but cannot be observed due to cloud cover. Tremor signal is still elevated but with a an overall decreasing tendency.

Once in a lifetime galactic fireworks display due from Comet Ison

A Hubble Space Telescope image of Comet ISON hurtling towards the sun. The comet is traveling at 48,000 miles per hour

A once in a lifetime galactic fireworks display appears to have begun after astronomers confirmed that Comet Ison, dubbed the “comet of the century”, has entered the Earth's orbit. The comet has dramatically brightened with an outburst of gases in recent days as it draws ever closer to the sun, the Times reported, and if it survives it could be the greatest celestial display in more than 300 years. It is now visible to the naked eye and is expected to continue brightening over the next few weeks until it outshines the moon.

Midwest Tornado Outbreak: 6 Deaths in Illinois; Damage in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and 9 Other States

tornado outbreak

WASHINGTON, Ill. -- As a powerful tornado bore down on their Illinois farmhouse, Curt Zehr's wife and adult son didn't have time to do anything but scramble down the stairs into their basement.

Uninjured, the pair looked out moments later to find the house gone and the sun out and "right on top" of them, Zehr said. The home on the outskirts of Washington, Ill., was swept up and scattered over hundreds of yards by one of the dozens of tornadoes and intense thunderstorms that swept across the Midwest on Sunday, leaving at least six people dead and unleashing powerful winds that flattened entire neighborhoods, flipped over cars and uprooted trees.

"They saw (the tornado) right there and got in the basement," said a stunned Zehr, pointing to the farm field near the rubble that had been his home.
