She's smoking! Mount Etna puffs out dozens of rings measuring hundreds of feet across as she spews molten lava

 smoke rings

Volatile volcano Mount Etna has been blowing perfect 'smoke' rings into Sicily's blue skies.

The volcano erupted violently on November 11 and since then has produced regular explosions, as well as hundreds of perfect vortex rings.

While theories abound, scientists are not entirely sure why the volcano is able to blow the circular puffs of steam - although some think a circular vent could be the cause.

Mount Sinabung spews pyroclastic smoke as seen from Tigapancur village in Karo district

More than 5,000 people have fled their homes in western Indonesia in recent days following a series of violent volcanic eruptions.

Mount Sinabung on the north of Sumatra island has been hurling out red-hot ash, rocks and torrents of glowing lava up to four miles into the air since the start of the month.

The latest eruption today forced people from seven villages to flee their homes to seek refuge in government shelters.

~Space Weather Update~ RARE DOUBLE-COMET FLYBY OF MERCURY

Lia's picture

RARE DOUBLE-COMET FLYBY OF MERCURY: NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft is about to get a close-up view of Comet ISON's outburst. On Nov. 18-19 Comet ISON and Comet Encke both will fly by Mercury, the planet MESSENGER is orbiting. You can learn more about this rare double-comet flyby and what MESSENGER might see in a video from Science@NASA.

COMET ISON OUTBURST CONTINUES: The abrupt brightening of Comet ISON on Nov. 14th has pushed the comet into the range of naked eye visibility. Dark-sky observers around the world report seeing it with their unaided eyes on the morning of Nov. 15th. To the human eye, ISON is just a faint smudge of magnitude +5.5. Backyard telescopes are revealing much more. The effects of the outburst have propagated into the comet's suddenly riotous tail, as shown in this image taken just hours ago by Jerry Lodriguss of Atsion, New Jersey:

"After its recent outburst, Comet ISON was looking very interesting this morning with multiple streamers in the tail," says Lodriguss.

Northern WA unites to help typhoon-hit Philippines

By: ABC, 11/15/2013

Filipino communities in Western Australia's north are pulling together in the wake of Typhoon Hiayan that has devastated their homeland. It has been an anxious wait for Filipino families across regional WA but Robyn Merrill says all but one of the 35 Filipino families in Broome have now managed to contact their loved ones. Fundraising events, including beach barbecues and car washes, are being held in Broome and Karratha this week. "If they can picture a Filipino person sitting in front of a flattened house, if they can picture giving that person money, well that's what it'll be doing, it's very direct," Mr Merrill said. He says they may have to hand-deliver the money raised if it takes too long for the Philippines banking system to be restored.

Wild storms drench central Queensland

Silver's picture

By: Andree Withey and Paul Robinson, 11/15/2013

The State Emergency Service (SES) has had another busy night after severe storms lashed parts of Queensland again yesterday. Crews says they have received 71 calls for help in the past 24 hours. The weather bureau says the Central Highlands bore the brunt of yesterday's wild weather. Nearly 120 millimetres fell near Woorabinda, 100mm at Thangool, and many other areas received about 60mm. Weather bureau spokesman Benj Blunt says one particular storm cell affected a wide area. "One particular super-cell started up about 5:30[pm] yesterday just to the south of Rolleston and it went for about eight hours, tracked a good 300 kilometres, clearing off the coast just south of Emu Park "It was a beauty all right, so they can hang around for a while." Ergon is reporting some places are without power. The rain also forced the postponement of Rockhampton's annual Christmas parade along Musgrave Street to a major shopping centre. More rain is forecast over the next few days.

Typhoon Haiyan: Death Toll From Storm Tops 3,600 In The Philippines

OdiStar's picture

BBCnews.com - 15 November 2013

The BBC's Andrew Harding: "The very first encounter between storm and land. Not much of a contest"

The number of people in the Philippines confirmed dead from Typhoon Haiyan now stands at 3,621, officials say.

UN and local agencies have issued conflicting tolls, and the final figure is likely to rise still higher.

One week after the storm, food and supplies are now beginning to reach survivors, but aid agencies say the logistics of distribution are enormous.

The Philippine government has defended its response to the disaster, one of the strongest storms ever on land.

Bright Fireballs - Leonids Meteor Shower - To Peak November 16-17, 2013

MessageToEagle.com - The 2013 Leonid meteor shower peaks during the night (after midnight) and early morning hours of 16 and 17 of November. A full moon will shine all night long, making 2013 an unfavorable year for watching the Leonids.Leonids are bits of debris from Comet Tempel-Tuttle. Every 33 years the comet visits the inner solar system and leaves a stream of dusty debris in its wake.

Many of these streams have drifted across the November portion of Earth's orbit. Whenever our planet hits one, meteors appear to be flying out of the constellation Leo.The shower should be visible from any populated area on the planet with clear dark skies, though Northern Hemisphere observers are favored due to the radiant's location in the constellation Leo.
