Canceled TEDx Talk - Understanding Bias, Prejudice, & Diversity

TEDxRaleigh 2016, a regional TEDx event, canceled this talk about bias, prejudice, and diversity.

After initially being selected, this talk was canceled quite abruptly from TEDxRaleigh 2016 – a regional TEDx event in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The talk illustrates how we all learn and live through bias – but how we can better connect through understanding our diversity.

TEDx, founded as a platform for “ideas worth spreading,” rejected the completion of this talk after stating ‘it was not practical’ and ‘would not connect.’

But then a few in a committee are not allowing the public to decide what makes sense to them.

Even though the talk was pulled from the TEDxRaleigh event, it is such an important “idea worth spreading” especially as we’re navigating such divisive times.

What is Love?

What is Love

‘What is Love!? …Baby don’t hurt me… no more!’ as the pop dance song by Haddaway goes. Haha, if you know the song, you’re probably hearing it in your head right now.

Actually love never hurts, but it is our ideas about love which hurt us in the end.

Let’s see if we can dismantle these ideas and notions about love so we can open the way to a more authentic experience. But don’t take these words for it, see what you recognize in your own life.

The Idea of Love

Growing up we are sold so many ideas about what love means and how love ought to be. Such a strong need and desire is love, that Disney, Hollywood, Hallmark, the diamond industry, and so many others have fought to corner the market on love. Before them it was religions which dictated how love should operate.

The News

by Sardar Singh

The news shows us so many terrible things happening in our world. There is enormous confusion, war, terrorism and endless division caused by nations and organized religions driven by their own agendas. There are divisions within nations due to power struggles between political parties. There are divisions within the same religious groups due to differences in beliefs, ideas, and values.

We may get upset by what is happening in the world but the vast majority of people delegate responsibility to leaders or to care of ‘higher powers’. There are those who are very much disturbed by the events but do not find an adequate response to the sordid human situation.

With history constantly repeating, we have seen that human beings have not changed during the past thousands of years in spite of so much misery and sorrow arising out of conflicts between religions and nations.

The way things are at present it appears almost impossible that a drastic revolution can take place.

But resignation prevents us from looking at the problem with a fresh and open mind.

We need to look directly at the thought process that creates the problems in the first place. We need to ask why human beings constantly divide themselves into so many different cultural, religious and national identities and what are the implications of this whole divisive process?
