Psilocybin Appears to 'Reset' Brain Activity of Depressed Patients – Stunning Results

Heather Callaghan, Contributor
Waking Times

To be sure, of all the recent human trials to come out showing the promises of psilocybin – the hallucinogenic compound found in magic mushrooms – it’s only the scientists who are surprised by the stunning brain changes from psychedelics. (Then again, behold the results for yourself.)

That’s what happened when Robin Carhart-Harris of Imperial College London and his colleagues announced the good news today with their newly published study in Scientific Reports. They ran 19 depressed and treatment-resistant volunteers through a magic mushroom trial to look at the results in their brains. Previously, Carhart-Harris and his team ran 12 people through a similar trial and five months later, 5 of them were still free of depression. That report detailed the spiritual benefits of psilocybin for depression.

Most of Us Are Ingesting Plastic Fibers Without Even Realizing It

Anna Hunt, Staff Writer

Plastic, once regarded as convenient and versatile, has actually become one of the biggest environmental problems of our time. It’s easy to see the extend of the contamination when you visit the oceanside. Even the most remote beaches are often littered with plastic debris. Now, new evidence reveals the problem of plastic pollution hits much closer to home. Microplastics, invisible to the human eye, are present in our drinking water, and as a result are polluting our bodies.

Study Reveals We are Ingesting Plastic Fibers via Tap Water

An investigation commissioned by Orb Media revealed that microplastics were present in 83 percent of drinking water samples. The study encompassed more than a dozen countries, including the U.S., the U.K., France, Germany, Lebanon, Indonesia, Equator, and India.

When comparing contamination rates, the U.S. had the highest rate at 94 percent. This means that researchers found plastic fibers in 94 percent of the water samples collected at dozens of locations around the country.

Meditation Can ‘Turbo Charge’ the Brain by Synchronizing Two Key Regions, Latest Science

Christina Sarich, Staff Writer
Waking Times

Researchers from Boston University have figured out two areas of the brain which must be activated to ‘turbo charge” cognitive functioning.

Two brain regions – the medial frontal and lateral prefrontal cortices – control most executive function. It was found that by synchronizing these areas of our grey matter, participants in a study experienced better, faster brain functioning. De-synchronizing these areas resulted in the opposite – a slower brain.  However, if there more to the story of our brain’s left or right brain dominance?

Using high-definition transcranial alternating current stimulation (HD-tACS) to synchronize oscillations between the medial frontal and lateral prefrontal cortices, resulted in faster neurotransmitter firing.

The synchronization of these two areas of the brain also resulted in better communication abilities and more control over the participants’ emotional reactions.

Brave New World - Doctors and Researchers Make the Case for Preemptive Antidepressants

Alex Pietrowski, Staff Writer

Should people without depression take medication to prevent it? This is the latest question to come out of modern psychiatry, and is explored in detail in a recent article by a major news outlet. In short, they are presenting an admittedly controversial idea, the suggestion that certain people who are statistically at a high risk of developing symptoms of depression be treated preemptively with antidepressants.

Looking at a research report out of Nebraska, the article notes that patients suffering from head and neck cancers are predisposed to becoming clinically depressed during treatment, and that in a study, patients given antidepressants were less likely to get depressed.

“In medicine, this approach is often referred to as prophylaxis, or a treatment used to prevent disease.

11 Actions Which Indicate You’re Actually Waking Up - Waking Times

Phillip J. Watt, Contributor
Waking Times

Residents of earth are becoming more conscious in two primary areas.

The first relates to the way in which our planetary social system has been hijacked into a scam to predominately benefit a select few at the expense of the rest of us, as well as our natural systems. The second concerns our intimate connection to all of reality, regardless if viewed through an ecological, scientific or metaphysical lens.

These shifts in consciousness are not based on new insights. In our so-called ‘civilised’ history there have always been royal families, aristocrats and the upper echelons of social and corporate structures who have aimed to control local, regional and international populations through whatever means possible, leading to many revolutions. Moreover, the dominant philosophy throughout humanity’s evolution is arguably animistic in nature, and consciousness played an integral role for not just ancient people’s, but more modern minds as well.

9 Rules for Living as Learned from Proper Ayahuasca Shaman

Dylan Charles, Editor
Waking Times

“All the authentic drinkers of yagé in the Amazon that I have met share a great love for nature and all humanity, and they are outspoken protectors of the rainforest and the good way of all that is right.” ~Jonathon Miller Weisberger, Rainforest Medicine

By itself, ayahuasca as a transformational medicine offers us profound opportunities for spiritual awakening, physical renewal and reconnection to the most important aspects of life and nature. Journeying with the vine of souls is unlike anything else in this world, and while many have shared their personal stories of harrowing nights in ceremony, another chief aspect of this medicine tradition is less often discussed: the valuable lessons to be learned from time spent with traditional plant medicine masters.

Another Medical Study Links Fluoride to Lower IQ in Children

Alex Pietrowski, Staff Writer

Fluoridating municipal water supplies is akin to medicating someone without their consent, and is an abuse of human rights. The practice of fluoridation is justified as a necessary public health intervention to combat tooth decay, even though the known dangers of fluoridation far exceed the potential benefit.

The notion that drinking fluoridated water decreases IQ in children is backed up by a number of studies and testimony by people at the highest levels of public health. In 2012, a major Harvard study found that public water fluoridation poses a risk to the developing intelligence of children, essentially lowering the IQ of those in communities with public water fluoridation.

Toxic Chemicals in Tattoo Inks Linked to Chronic Health Conditions - Waking Times

Alex Pietrowski, Staff Writer

Tattoos are more popular now than ever before. While they tend to signify our rebellious nature, those who ink themselves up still may want to know the very real health risks involved in embedding potentially toxic chemicals under their skin. It is estimated that some 80 million people in the U.S. today are tattooed, and simultaneously, chronic autoimmune and inflammatory illnesses are also widespread.

There are a number of links between tattooing oneself and chronic health issues, and while many doctors may recognize this in their patients, there is little public awareness of this connection. Part of the problem is that tattooing is primarily unregulated, resulting in a wide-range of products being used, with little awareness by the consumer.

Latest Research Explains Why a Low-Fat Diet Can Actually Kill You - Waking Times

Alex Pietrowski, Staff Writer
Waking Times

One of the great myths of the American diet has just been shattered. It’s one that prompted an explosion in the market for processed foods which substituted chemical concoctions for natural fats in processed foods. And now, finally, the fat-free craze can be safely put to rest.

A study of 135,000 adults, conducted by Lancet, overturns decades of conventional wisdom and warns us that a low-fat diet may actually be killing us. In short, the findings suggest that this type of diet could raise the risk of early death by almost 25%, a number significant enough to challenge current trends in dietary wisdom.

“The study, which has been published in The Lancet, found people with the highest 20 per cent intake of total fat – getting around a third of their calories from fate – had about 23 per cent reduced risk of death compared to those with the lowest 20 per cent of fat intake.

Consuming more fat, whether that was saturated, polyunsaturated or monounsaturated were all associated with lower mortality.

Drug Company Caught Faking Cancer Patients to Push Deadly Opioids for Profit

Alex Pietrowski, Staff Writer
Waking Times

If the opioid crisis is to be resolved, opioid manufacturers must somehow be held to account for criminally pushing addictive and deadly products onto the public. While some cities and states are already suing pharmaceutical companies over this, and some pharmaceutical executives have been arrested on conspiracy charges, a new corruption case highlights the methods companies are using to create addict customers.
