Solar Update
Solar activity has been low with only low level C-Class activity detected around mostly departing region 1476 off the western limb. All other sunspot regions are currently stable. New sunspot 1486 was numbered on Friday.

New lava flow on Bagana volcano, Papua New Guinea

Despite being one of the most active volcanoes in Papua New Guinea, Bagana is poorly monitored. Located on the mountainous spine of Bouganville Island, it is both far from any cities or large towns and hard to reach due to the rough terrain. Bagana emits volcanic gases (including water vapor and sulfur dioxide) almost continuously, and frequently extrudes thick lava flows. Satellites provide the most reliable way to watch this activity.
This natural-color image reveals a fresh lava flow on Bagana’s eastern flank. The image was collected by the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) aboard the Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite on May 16, 2012. Imagery from Landsat 7 shows that the flow was established some time between March 2011 and February 2012. The fresh lava is dark brown, while lighter brown areas were likely stripped of vegetation by volcanic debris or acidic gases. Older lava flows are covered in light green vegetation, and the surrounding forests are dark green. The volcanic plume and clouds are both white.

The Sirung stratovolcano on the remote Pantar island in Indonesia has come back to life with a series of probably phreatic explosions and strong degassing.

Strong earthquake with magnitude 5.9 struck Antofagasta, Chile

Strong earthquake struck Chile again. On May 19, 2012 at 8:35 UTC magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Antofagasta, Chile. Recorded depth according to USGS was 25 km (15.5 miles). Epicenter location was 54 km (33 miles) SW of Taltal, Antofagasta, Chile (25.783°S, 70.793°W).
Universidad de Chile is reporting a magnitude of 6.1 at a depth of 37 km. 92 km al NO de Chañaral and the epicenter located approx. 40 km out of the coast.
It is currently night in Chile and the earthquake parameters are not strong enough to generate a tsunami.
All data are still preliminary.
Strongest shaking values are noticed at the following locations: Caldera : MMI VI (strong shaking); Copiapo and Tierra Amarilla, both MMI V (moderate shaking).
Three strong earthquakes struck near the March 11, 2011, M9.0 area within three hours

On May 19, 2012 JST three strong earthquakes struck near the March 11, 2011 magnitude 9.0 Great Tohoku earthquake and they all happened within three hours. For easier understanding of times when they occurred all earthquakes will be described in UTC time.
According to USGS, the first one occurred at 21:23 UTC on May 18, 2012 off the East coast of Honshu (39.677°N, 143.172°E) with magnitude 5.0 and recorded depth of 16.5 km (10.3 miles).
The second one was recorded 10 minutes later at 21:32 UTC on May 18 with magnitude 4.7 and recorded depth of 27.4 km (17.0 miles). The third one, two and a half hours later, at 00:08 UTC on May 19, with recorded depth of 22.1 km (13.7 miles) and magnitude 4.8.
JMA had the same values and recorded:
