Large new sunspot emerging over Sun’s eastern limb

May 5, 2012 - SPACE - Big New Sunspot: A large sunspot group is rotating into view over the sun’s northeastern limb. The emergence of this apparently significant active region could herald an increase in solar activity. Solar wind flowing from this coronal hole should reach Earth on May 9-10. -Space Weather
M-Class Flare: A low level M-Class flare reaching M1.4 just took place around Sunspot 1476 at 13:23 UTC. Stay Tuned as solar activity continues to increase.
Venus transit of 2012 will not be seen again until 2117

A transit of Venus is the observed passage of the planet across the disk of the Sun. The planet Venus, orbiting the Sun “on the inside track,” catches up to and passes the slower Earth. Venus, appearing as a small dot in the foreground, will move from left to right across the Sun. The word “transit” means passage or movement—in this case, across the face of the Sun.
The next transit of Venus will occur on June 6th (Tuesday, June 5th from the Western Hemisphere) in 2012. The entire event of 2012 will be widely visible from the western Pacific, eastern Asia and eastern Australia. Most of North and Central America, and northern South America will witness the beginning of the transit (on June 5) but the Sun will set before the event ends. Similarly, observers in Europe, western and central Asia, eastern Africa and western Australia will see the end of the event since the transit will already be in progress at sunrise from those locations.

Eta Aquarid Meteor Update

The eta Aquarid meteor shower, due to peak on May 5-6, is already underway. Cameras in NASA's All-Sky Fireball Network have picked up more than a dozen eta-fireballs this week, including seven last night alone. NASA astronomer Bill Cooke prepared this diagram showing the orbits of the fireballs detected so far:
"The purple line traces the orbit of Halley's Comet, source of the eta Aquarids," says Cooke. "Blue lines are orbits of the individual fireballs determined from simultaneous observations by multiple cameras." A statistical analysis of the data shows that the fireballs hit Earth's atmosphere traveling about 66 km/s (139,000 mph) and disintegrated about 90 km (52 mi) above Earth's surface.
Forecasters expect the shower to peak this weekend; the best time to look is during the hours before sunrise on Sunday, May 6th. Because the shower's radiant is located below the celestial equator, southern hemisphere observers are favored, but even northerners should be able to see a few eta Aquarids. Super-bright moonlight will cap the meteor rate at about 30 per hour.
Shallow 4.3 magnitude earthquake rattles northern California

May 5, 2012 – CALIFORNIA – A shallow 4.3 magnitude earthquake struck a region of northern California about 4 km (3 miles) from The Geysers, Ca. The depth of the earthquake was about 2.8 km (1.7 miles) and the earthquake’s epicenter was about 115 km (72 miles) WNW (284°) from Sacramento, CA. Today’s earthquake was not near the San Andreas Fault line. There have been no preliminary reports of damage or injuries. The earthquake is the latest in a recent wave of cluster tremors that have rippled through the state of California. –The Extinction Protocol
