Three M-Class Flares / Sunspot 1476
Solar activity increased to moderate levels thanks to newly numbered Sunspot 1476. This new region rotated into view off the northeast limb and has so far produced a pair of M-Class flares. The latest event was an M1.3 at 23:01 UTC Saturday evening. Stay Tuned to SolarHam.com as solar activity is again increasing.
UPDATE: Sunspot 1476 did generate a third low level M-Class flare early on Sunday morning.

Hail the size of baseballs trashed wheat crops of southwestern Oklahoma farming town

Residents of Grandfield, southwestern Oklahoma farming town, spent Saturday cleaning up after a compact storm carrying a big punch pretty well shut the town down. Hail the size of baseballs thrashed the wheat crop just days before harvest, damaging hundreds of homes and vehicles when the storm rolled through Friday evening.
City Manager Randy Clark said residents were repairing windows and roofs, and insurance agents and power line repairmen were working through the day Saturday.
“We just got clobbered,” Clark said. “I’ve seen hail storms before but this was the most damaging storm I’ve ever seen here in town.”Clark said power lines came down west of town at the airport, and one woman was injured when the storm rolled through about 6 p.m. Friday.
The National Weather Service reported the small but ferocious storm developed just 20 minutes before hitting the town.
The storm caused significant damage to Randlett, in Cotton County, before heading south and east into northern Texas.
Tillman County Sheriff Bobby Whittington, who lives in Grandfield, said he was not at home at the time of the storm but four of his family’s vehicles were likely totaled.
Whittington said the storm blew the roof off a local diner and destroyed three of his sheriff’s department vehicles.
Wheat farmers may have suffered the worst damage, though, with the giant hail obliterating most of the area’s crop in a matter of minutes. The wheat was especially susceptible to storm damage because it was nearly mature, with harvest scheduled to kick off Tuesday.
“It was a pretty damn hard blow to a farming community that’s trying to come back from a devastating drought last year,” Whittington said.

Nepal flash flood death toll may hit 60

May 6, 2012 – NEPAL – The death toll in a flash flood in Nepal’s central Annapurna region could be as high as 60, according to rescuers scouring the area for survivors. They say there is almost no hope of finding anyone else alive. Fifteen bodies have been recovered but district police superintendent Sailesh Thapa told AFP that 43 missing people, including three Ukrainian tourists, were feared dead. “So far, 12 of the 15 bodies have been identified. An excavator has reached the worst affected areas and is clearing the mud,” he said. “We have a list of another 43 people who have gone missing. Their chances of survival are almost zero. The three Ukrainians are still missing.” Eight people have been rescued since the Seti burst its banks near the city of Pokhara, a tourist hub, on Saturday, sweeping away a village and swamping families picnicking by the river. Most of the missing are thought to be local. One witness, Uddha Bahadur Gurung, described how the river suddenly turned into a lethal surge. “There was nothing unusual. People were enjoying picnics, some were relaxing in the hot spring pools by the river and others working,” he told the Kathmandu Post. “Out of nowhere came this swelling dark murky water with debris, sweeping away many people.” Sniffer dogs have been sent 200km from the capital Kathmandu to search for bodies along the banks of the river, which has now subsided, while police and army personnel hunt for survivors. Prime Minister Baburam Bhattari broke off from political negotiations over forming a new government to visit Kharapani village, which was washed away by the flood. “He has instructed the authorities to bring 20 excavators so that the dead bodies of those who have been buried by the floods can be recovered,” Bishwadeep Pandey, personal secretary to the premier, told AFP. -SMH
Flames and smoke erupt from ground in Kinniya, Sri Lanka

May 6, 2012 – SRI LANKA – A large crowd flocked to see flames and smoke which mysteriously appeared from a hole dug up in Turai Adi in Kinniya today (May 04). Abdul Kader Farook, who lives near Kinniya Bridge, was digging a hole near his home to dump garbage had noticed flames and smoke coming out of the earth. He had subsequently contacted the police regarding the incident. Police and army personnel were deployed to the location to control the crowds after a tense situation had ensued. -Adaderana
Ash on snow from Shiveluch volcano on Kamchatka Peninsula, eastern Russia

As part of the Pacific Volcanic Ring, the remote and beautiful Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia holds more than 300 volcanoes, and twenty-nine of them are currently active. Of all the volcanoes on Kamchatka, Shiveluch is the most active – indeed, it is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth.
Throughout April and early May, 2012, Shiveluch has been in more-or-less constant eruption, effusing a steady flow of lava and intermittently expelling bursts of gases and ash. The Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Team (KVERT) reported ash plumes rising to 17,800 ft (5.4 km) on May 1.
Such intense activity has left a mark on the landscape that is easily visible from space. In this true-color image bellow, captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite on May 4, 2012, broad lines of brownish-gray ash cover the snow around Shiveluch. These shadows were created by plumes of ash as they were carried by the wind across the Kamchatka Peninsula.
New Zealand rattled by twin earthquakes

May 6, 2012 – NEW ZELAND – Two earthquakes have hit parts of New Zealand today. A magnitude 4.2 earthquake shook people in the Wellington region and parts of the top of the South Island at 11.33am (9.33am AEST). The tremor was centered 10 kilometers southwest of Wellington, at a depth of 30km, GeoNet says. The second quake, also measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale, struck at 12.31pm and was felt on the west coast of the South Island. It was centered 10km south of Ross at a depth of 15km. Police told AAP they had received no reports of damage. –The Australian News
