Salt-Powered Lamp: 8 Hours of Light from 1 Glass of Saltwater

Aiming to bring low-cost illumination to residents of the Philippines, a nation of 7,000 oceanic islands, the Salt Lamp uses a free and abundant resource to reduce fire risk from candles and replace the cost of traditional lighting.

Developed by engineer Lipa Aisa Mijena of De La Salle University, the Salt Lamp requires a single glass of water with two tablespoons of salt to provide a night’s worth of a light (complimenting approaches like Liters of Light that work in dark spaces during the day), but, best of all, it can run off the naturally salty water of the surrounding ocean.

A pair of electrodes, the other key ingredient, can run for up to a year without requiring replacement. The next-generation version of the Salt Lamp will also have the capacity to charge batteries in portable electronic devices including cellular phones. Essentially, “this lamp uses the science behind the Galvanic cell, the basis for battery-making, changing the electrolytes to a non-toxic, saline solution — making the entire process safe and harmless.”

The Irritation Is NOT In The Event, It’s In YOU!

By Brett Jones

What is Happiness? When we say we are seeking happiness what we really mean is, we will be happy when we get everything we want. Unfortunately life is not built like that.

Many seek happiness by wanting the world to conform to their desires. They work hard and attempt to influence people to do what they want, even manipulate or tell lies to bend reality to their needs. This is the ego’s way of being happy. It never works.

What we really seek is not happiness but peace. Why? Peace comes from bending ourselves to reality. The ego never wants us to do this. Bending ourselves means to accept what is. No matter what occurs we can be at peace with it when we can look at the event and say to ourselves “Interesting that this happened, now what am I going to do about it”?

Navigating the Plastic Jungle – Understanding What’s What PLUS Easy Ways to Adjust Your Plastic Use

By Katrin Geist
Guest Writer for Wake Up World

Ah, the curse of plastics! They surround us on all levels, in all areas of life. They also cause major health and environmental problems. One of my earliest memories is that of Mom tightening and tying up the (plastic) diaper straps around my groin. Not nice when too tight.

Fast forward 40 years: to this day, disposable diapers – while doubtlessly a huge aid to parents everywhere – contribute a mountain of plastic waste that is not easily dealt with. And of course it’s not only diapers. This is but one example of a large problem: introducing exorbitant quantities (245+ million tons of plastic each year — Lithner 2011) of substances to our planet that it has no concept of integrating.

Nature works perfectly in all of her cycles. There is no such thing as waste. Everything is food. Not so in our world. Initiatives like “Cradle to Cradle” and “upcycling” are slowly beginning to change this, however.

Monsanto and Others Caught Paying Internet ‘Trolls’ to Attack Activists

Have you ever seen a post, comment, or reply that absolutely reeked of behind-the-scenes compensation by corporations like Monsanto? In the growing age of internet activism, and the expansion of social media as a tool to spread the word on real issues, paid internet trolling is becoming a new career path.

Now, in case you’re not familiar with what ‘trolling’ really is, I think Wikipedia has a great definition. According to Wikipedia, an internet troll is:

“…a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

Does this sound like some posts you’ve seen before? Now, let’s be clear: there are tons of internet trolls out there that are absolutely not on the pay roll. Most of these people are genuinely just messing with others to get a laugh, a reaction, or whatever. Not arguing on behalf of multi-billion dollar corporations for up to 8 hours per day.

Daily Message ~ Monday July 27, 2015

In order to heal you must first stop the trauma. Do you allow others to treat you in ways that are less than you deserve? Do you abuse yourself with your negative self talk or poor boundaries? Dear Ones, loving another should never come at the cost of not loving yourselves. The balance and nurturing you seek comes from loving yourself just as tenderly and unconditionally as you love others. ~Archangel Gabriel

Can You Give Away Too Much? I

God said:

You can give away too much of yourselves. Sometimes you like to give away too much. Even as you know you are overdoing, you feel impelled or compelled to give away too much of your own hide. I wonder what it is that you think you have to prove. And to whom are you proving it? To others or to yourself? Is there something somewhere that you think you have to atone for? You didn’t get the idea of overdoing and sacrifice from Me, beloveds.

When you give away too much, you are exceeding. You are simply giving away too much. No one asked you to. Or, if someone does ask or expect it of you, still it’s something you ask of yourself or demand of yourself. You may feel this beforehand or afterwards and then you recognize and are dismayed at your lopsidedness. Still, you do it.

There is an expression: Giving your whole heart and soul.

Giving your whole heart and soul to Me is one thing. Giving your whole heart and soul to the world doesn’t carry the same ring. Your giving away everything is not the same as loving everyone. Perhaps somewhere in your psyche, you believe you have to make up for something, and you don’t know what. Let Me state this clearly and firmly:

I do not ask you to be a martyr. Martyrdom is not meant to be a conscious or unconscious ambition.

Your giving is not to subtract from you. If you give more than you can give, you are suspect. You may be making yourself into a self-induced self-proclaimed martyr. Yes, by all means, give. This does not mean to give all your life energy away.

Everywhere the society consists of mediocre minds - the middle class, the bourgeoisie; those who have known nothing except chasing after money and power, those who have never seen anything in depth, those who are not aware at all of the vertical dimension of life, those who go on running as fast as they can on the horizontal plane. And then one day they fall in their graves without knowing at all what they have missed, without knowing the glory and splendor of life and existence.

Society consists of the mediocre people, and to adjust yourself to the mediocre people is to become a mediocrity on your own. Beware of it. Watch your steps. The trap is all around and the trap is very alluring because it gives you the cheap satisfaction of being a certain self. And all kinds of selves are available; you can go window-shopping.

Why You Need More Sunshine & How to Get it

The messages you’ve received about the sun have been mixed from the time you were a child. At one point, getting outside and getting sun was encouraged. The next second, it was terrible and likely to cause cancer and any number of other debilitating or disfiguring side effects.

So what’s the deal? Is the sun something to be avoided at all costs? Should exposure be minimized? Or should you maximize exposure to sunshine for an overwhelming number of health benefits? And if so, how can you make it happen?

Why Exposure to the Sun is Important

Here’s the thing: The sun pumps out important nutrients, like vitamin D, that can be hard to find in foods and other sources. When we put on too much protective sunscreen, we block it out. Many health conditions have a direct link to low levels of vitamin D; just a few of them are...

The 'impossible' EmDrive could reach Pluto in 18 months

Last summer WIRED revealed that Nasa's Eagleworks Lab was testing a copy of the EmDrive, a propulsion device frequently labelled as "impossible" because it appears to violate the law of conservation of momentum. Against all expectation they found it produced thrust. The response from the scientific community was dramatic, and generally sceptical -- but the "anomalous thrust" stubbornly refuses to disappear as more research zeroes in on it.

The situation is not helped by garbled media reports like "British scientist who says he's found the secret of Star Trek's 'warp speed'". But the subject is attracting serious examination from scientists who want to know if a sealed cavity filled with resonating microwaves can really produce net thrust. Previously the effect has been measured by British scientist Roger Shawyer, who invented the EmDrive, and a Chinese team, as well as Nasa.

Martin Tajmar, professor and chair for Space Systems at the Dresden University of Technology, is perhaps uniquely well qualified to evaluate the EmDrive. His research interests include "Breakthrough Propulsion Physics," space drives which do not rely on the variations on rocket thrust but which draw on more exotic science.
