High pressure centered over the Four Corners will continue to expand, allowing temperatures to surge again Friday in the Southwest.Temperatures in cities such as Phoenix, Ariz., and Palm Springs, Calif., are expected to make it into the 90s for the second day in a row.

Palm Springs has gotten an early jump on the warmth, with the "heat wave" starting back on Tuesday, reaching 90 degrees, then following with a warm 95 on Wednesday. Phoenix last reached this temperature in the beginning of November; however, even for that time of the year, a temperature in the low 90s is more than 10 degrees above the climatological average.

CARTERTON, New Zealand -- Dairy farmer John Rose has sent more than 100 of his cows to the slaughterhouse over recent weeks as a severe drought browned pastures in New Zealand's normally verdant North Island. He had to thin his herd so the remaining 550 cows have enough to eat, and he's supplementing their diet with ground palm kernel as the grass in his fields withers.

LAGUNA BEACH, California -- Sick and malnourished sea lion pups are stranding themselves on Southern California beaches in some of the largest numbers seen in over a decade, perplexing scientists and leading one care facility to declare itself near capacity.

Animal rescuers believe adult sea lions are again foraging deeper into the ocean this year, but the reasons are unclear. What has been evident is the poor health of the many sea lion pups stranding themselves on beaches.

MEXICO CITY -- The number of Monarch butterflies making it to their winter refuge in Mexico dropped 59 percent this year, falling to the lowest level since comparable record-keeping began 20 years ago, scientists reported Wednesday.

It was the third straight year of declines for the orange-and-black butterflies that migrate from the United States and Canada to spend the winter sheltering in mountaintop fir forests in central Mexico. Six of the last seven years have shown drops, and there are now only one-fifteenth as many butterflies as there were in 1997.

Weather Online.co.uk - 3/14/13

The Brocken spectre (or Brocken bow) is an apparently greatly magnified shadow of an observer cast against mist or cloud below the level of a summit or ridge and surrounded by rainbow coloured fringes resulting from the diffraction of light. The effect is an illusion. Depth perception is altered by the mist, causing the shadow to appear more distant and to be interpreted as larger than normally expected.

Cyclone threatening Lord Howe Island

Weather Zone.com - 3/14/13, Brett Dutschke

Sandra first formed late last week over the Coral Sea, about 1000km northeast of Mackay. She then intensified into a severe category three system while travelling east, further away from mainland Australia. Early this week she turned more southerly, towards Lord Howe Island but had weakened into a category one cyclone.

During this morning Sandra intensified and is likely to continue to do so during the day while closing in on Lord Howe Island. At this stage the cyclone should travel just to the east of Lord Howe while staying well to the west of Norfolk Island. By tomorrow morning the system should weaken just to the south and by tomorrow evening should weaken into a tropical depression on its way to New Zealand.
