The Post-GMO Economy

Modern Farmer, By: Elizabeth Royle, 12/12/2013

One mainstream farmer is returning to conventional seed and he’s not alone. Buying seeds used to be a fairly simple matter. Farmers picked four or five varieties offered by a regional dealer, and that was that. But in the mid-1990s, biotech companies started producing seeds genetically modified with traits from other organisms. One trait made soybeans resistant to the herbicide glyphosate; another, using a protein from the soil bacterium Bt, helped corn fend off the insects rootworm and European corn borer.

Huegerich’s father eagerly embraced the new genetically modified (GMO) seeds. They cost more, but he could save money on herbicides and pesticides. His yields and profits went up, helped in part by good weather and favorable market conditions. But as revenue rose and the years passed, trouble was looming.

In Brazil, farmer-led court actions are piling up against Monsanto for collecting royalties on RR1 soybeans regarded as illegal and for conditioning the sale of new GM seed Intacta RR2 to the signing of a contract seen as abusive, according to an article for Valor Online (Brazil). Lawyers for the farmers and representative bodies estimate the value of the claims against Monsanto at 1.9 billion Brazilian real (about USD 1 billion). Processes have not been completed, but preliminary estimates say the claims may affect the company’s profits.

According to Orlando Julius Caesar, lawyer for the Sinop Rural Union, a settlement reached in a previous lawsuit against Monsanto has resulted in many farmers refusing to buy Monsanto’s seed. “Monsanto is trying to create market rules that do not exist for any other product,” he said.

The African Centre for Biosafety (ACB) has today released its new research report titled ‘GM Maize: Lessons For Africa-Cartels, Collusion And Control Of South Africa’s Staple Food’ showing how a select group of companies, including Tiger Brands, Pioneer and Premier Foods who have previously fixed the price of bread and maize meal, commandeer the entire maize value chain and continue to squeeze the poorest South Africans. The ACB has recently shown that the entire maize meal market is saturated with GM maize.

gmos kill1 263x164 Boosting GMO Rejection: Help Bangladesh Stop GMO’s

The people of Bangladesh are facing a serious problem as their government recently approved the commercial cultivation of genetically modified eggplant. Now, they need your help. While the Bangladehi government, and others who support GMO crops, believes the Bt is necessary for controlling pests, others see the lack of success with other pest-controlling GMO creations – along with all of the dangers that come along. When they say these GM-crops perform better than the conventional crops, again, they are wrong. Several studies have shown GMO crops to perform worse than their conventional and less-harmful counterparts, even transforming otherwise benign pests into major crop-damaging threats.

Demonstrations were staged by those on both sides of the debate, including those, picture above, who maintained the a GMO ban would unnecessarily handcuff farmers. File photo.

Mayor Billy Kenoi today signed into law a bill that bans any new uses of genetically modified crops on the Big Island. Kenoi announced his decision to sign Bill 113 in a letter to the County Council. The council passed the measure on Nov. 19 on a 6-3 vote. The bill prohibits new open-air growing of genetically modified organisms, also known as GMOs.

Journal withdraws controversial French Monsanto GM study

By: Kate Kelland, 11/28/2013

LONDON, Nov 28 (Reuters) - The publisher of a controversial and much-criticised study suggesting genetically modified corn caused tumours in rats has withdrawn the paper after a yearlong investigation found it did not meet scientific standards.

Reed Elsevier's Food and Chemical Toxicology journal, which published the study by the French researcher Gilles-Eric Seralini in September 2012, said on Thursday the retraction was because the study's small sample size meant no definitive conclusions could be reached. "This retraction comes after a thorough and time-consuming analysis of the published article and the data it reports, along with an investigation into the peer-review behind the article," the journal said in statement. At the time of its original publication, hundreds of scientists across the world questioned Seralini's research, which said rats fed Monsanto's GM corn suffered tumours and multiple organ failure.

Canada Approves World’s First Genetically Modified Salmon Destined For Consumption In The U.S.

It seems the level of corruption at the hands of politicians and power hungry investors is no different in Canada than anywhere else in the world. Environment Canada has approved the commercial production of GM Atlantic salmon eggs which grow to market-size twice as fast as other farmed salmon. The biotech company responsible, Aquabounty, has revealed that it is no longer asking for approval to grow the fish in the US but plans to produce all of the GM salmon eggs in Canada and then sell “table-ready” GM salmon into the US consumer market. It is an alarming decision that sets Canada up to be the source of global environmental risk, says the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network.

Ellen Brown On the TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership)

Monsanto and Gates Foundation Push Genetically Engineered Crops on Africa

“Control oil and you control nations,” said US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in the 1970s.  “Control food and you control the people.”

Global food control has nearly been achieved, by reducing seed diversity with GMO (genetically modified) seeds that are distributed by only a few transnational corporations. But this agenda has been implemented at grave cost to our health; and if the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) passes, control over not just our food but our health, our environment and our financial system will be in the hands of transnational corporations.
