Monsanto’s Losses Widen as Seed Sales Decline

By: THE ASSOCIATED PRESS, 10/02/2013

WASHINGTON — Agricultural business giant Monsanto Co. reported worse-than-expected losses for its fiscal fourth quarter on Wednesday, due to lower sales of its genetically engineered seeds. The company forecast for fiscal 2014 also came in below Wall Street expectations, and it revealed plans to buy farming software and data firm The Climate Corporation. The combination sent shares lower in morning trading.

Monsanto said separately it would pay $930 million in cash for the Climate Corporation, which was founded in 1996 by engineers from Google and other Silicon Valley companies. The company's technology uses weather forecasting and data analysis to help farmers plan their growing seasons.

Total GMO Ban To Be Considered By Russia Within Weeks

Preventdisease.com, By: Natasha Longo, 09/30/2013

As one of the few nations in the world with a GMO-free platform, Russia does not allow any cultivation of GMOs for commercial purposes. Their regulatory agencies recently suspended the import and use of an American GM corn following a study suggesting a link to breast cancer and organ damage. The Russian Prime Minister has now ordered the same agencies to consider a possible ban on all GMO imports into Russia. The Russian Federal Environmental Assessment Commission has not adopted any commercialized GM varieties for agricultural use. The recent decision by the Russians to suspend authorisation for American GM corn threatens to trigger a transatlantic commercial and diplomatic row.

A growing body of scientific research - done mostly in Europe, Russia, and other countries - showing that diets containing engineered corn or soya cause serious health problems in laboratory mice and rats. Experts at the University of Caen conducted an experiment running for the full lives of rats - two years. The findings, which were peer reviewed by independent experts before being published in a respected scientific journal, found raised levels of breast cancer, liver and kidney damage.

Opponents score a victory in Senate against ‘Monsanto Protection Act’

In its short-term government-funding bill, the US Senate will propose an end to a budget provision that protects genetically-modified seeds from litigation despite possible health risks. Called “The Monsanto Protection Act” by opponents, the budget rider shields biotech behemoths like Monsanto, Cargill and others from the threat of lawsuits and bars federal courts from intervening to force an end to the sale of a GMO (genetically-modified organism) even if the genetically-engineered product causes damaging health effects.

The US House of Representatives approved a three-month extension to the rider in their own short-term FY14 Continuing Resolution spending bill, which was approved last week by the lower chamber. The Senate version of the legislation will make clear the provision expires on Sept. 30, the end of the current fiscal year.

How Genetically Engineered Foods Will Be Eradicated

By: Dr. Mercola, 09/01/2013

We’re in really exciting times with regards to shifting the tide against genetically engineered (GE) foods and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). As you know, I was a big supporter of the California GMO labeling campaign, and while we lost the vote by an incredibly narrow margin last November, Proposition 37 catalyzed an enormous amount of awareness across the US.

More people are now aware of GMO’s than we could possibly have ever reached through educational efforts alone, investing the same amount of money that we invested in Prop. 37. It really marked the beginning of the end for GM foods in the US. Jeffrey Smith, who is one of the leaders in educating people about the concerns and dangers of GMOs, has been at it for about 17 years. He believes we are now at the most critical stage in the history of GMO activism in the United States.

Whistleblower – Leonardo Melgarejo - All GMO approvals in Brazil are illegal and not science-based

Silver's picture

Leonardo Melgarejo

All approvals of GM crops in Brazil fail to conform with legal norms and twist science in the interests of GM companies, says regulator. The article below was submitted to Consea, the food safety advisory body to the Brazilian president, by Leonardo Melgarejo, a member of Brazil's GMO regulatory body CTNBio.

In the article, Melgarejo criticizes the release of GMOs in Brazil and exposes CTNBio's negligence in assessing them for safety. He describes unscientific tricks that are also used by European Food Safety Authority in its evaluations of GM foods, such as dismissing significant differences in GM-fed animals as not being biologically relevant - without any scientific justification. Melgarejo adds that all releases of GMOs in Brazil thus far are illegal because they fail to conform with legal norms set by the regulators.
