Vatican City, 21 Sept. (AKI) - The upcoming trial of Pope Benedict's former butler Paolo Gabriele for aggravated theft is unlikely to be over in a single day, but "may be "brief" the Vatican said on Friday.

"It is highly improbable that the trial will last just one day, while it is possible that it may be brief - but that's just a hypothesis," Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi told journalists.

Harvest Moons

In the coming days, the harvest moon - the full moon closest to the autumn equinox - will rise. Skywatchers in the Northern Hemisphere can see the spectacular site on the nights of Sept. 29 and Sept.30, 2012.

According EarthSky.org, the moon rises about 50 minutes later each day, but when a full moon occurs close to the autumn equinox, the moon rises about 30 minutes later. These earlier moon rises make every harvest moon special. The harvest moon is not necessarily larger, brighter or more orange-colored than other moons. It may have a different appearance because of its location in the sky.

Browned farmland, full of severely damaged corn stalks due to a widespread drought, as seen from the air near Ames, Iowa, August 28, 2012.

At first glance, it looks like a typical fall across the Midwest. It's not.

Beneath green pastures and lawns brought to life by August rains, the earth is still desiccated. On closer inspection, the brown corn stalks are half as tall as they should be and the husks contain stunted ears -- or nothing at all. The drought of 2012 isn't just a rural tragedy. Barges plying the Ohio and Mississippi rivers carry less cargo to avoid running aground in low water.

JAKARTA, Indonesia – A volcano in northern Indonesia has spewed hot smoke and ash thousands of feet into the air in two new eruptions. Mount Lokon on Sulawesi island had been dormant before rumbling back to life last year.

Government volcanologist Hendrasto says it unleashed two strong eruptions Friday. Residents have been put on alert, but no evacuations are planned since the nearest villages are beyond the danger area about 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) from the crater.

Mount Lokon’s last major eruption in 1991 killed a Swiss hiker and forced thousands to flee. The volcano is one of five on high alert in Indonesia. The archipelago straddles the “Pacific Ring of Fire” and has more active volcanoes than any other nation. –Windsor Star
