JERUSALEM — Former U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden has more secrets to reveal that relate to Israel, the journalist who first brought his leaks to the world's attention said on Monday.  Among allegations aired by Snowden last year were that the U.S. National Security Agency and its British counterpart GCHQ had in 2009 targeted an email address listed as belonging to then-Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and monitored emails of senior defense officials. Israel played down the disclosures. But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had ordered the matter examined and that "there are things that must not be done" between allies.

Why Pope Francis Worries the Rich~ and Why They’re Threatening Him

Pope FrancisStephen Cook: While some of the ‘suggestive’ language here is not our usual ‘style”, I’ve included it exactly as it appears in this article, simply because it’s indicative of the ‘style’ of some of the elite it discusses. FYI – Kenneth Langone is an American businessman and investor best known for co-founding The Home Depot. He has an estimated net worth of $2.1 billion according to Forbes. It is also said Langone has contributed almost $150 million to various charities, interestingly his focus has been on Universities, medical research and training, education, and helping children. Thanks to Dennis.

If anyone wonders whether Pope Francis has irritated wealthy conservatives with his courage and idealism, the latest outburst from Kenneth Langone left little doubt.

Sounding both aggressive and whiny, the billionaire investor warned that he and his overprivileged friends might withhold their millions from church and charity unless the pontiff stops preaching against the excesses and cruelty of unleashed capitalism.

Pope Francis tells Religious Orders to "Wake up the World"

Eddie1177's picture

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has told those in Religious Life to “wake up the world”, according to an article appearing in La Civiltà Cattolica, the Rome-based Jesuit weekly.
Editor Antonio Spadaro, SJ, has written an article recounting the private meeting last November between Pope Francis and the Union of Superiors General of religious men at the end of their 82nd General Assembly.

“Wake up the world! Be witnesses of a different way of doing things, of acting, of living! It is possible to live differently in this world,” Pope Francis said.
“We are speaking of an eschatological outlook, of the values of the Kingdom incarnated here, on this earth. It is a question of leaving everything to follow the Lord. No, I do not want to say “radical.” Evangelical radicalness is not only for religious: it is demanded of all. But religious follow the Lord in a special was, in a prophetic way. It is this witness that I expect of you. Religious should be men and women who are able to wake the world up.”

Manmohan Singh

India's prime minister, Manmohan Singh, has said he would step aside after 10 years in office, paving the way for Rahul Gandhi to take the reins if his party stays in power following this year's scheduled elections.

In only his third news conference in a decade, Singh said that Gandhi – the 43-year-old heir to India's Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty – has the best credentials to become the next head of Congress and prime minister. Singh is 81 and was not expected to seek another term.

"I have ruled myself out as a prime ministerial candidate," Singh said. "Rahul Gandhi has outstanding credentials … I do hope the party will take the right decision at the appropriate time."

A banker wanted by the FBI for a $21 million fraud case was arrested Tuesday in Georgia after being stopped for a minor traffic violation. The man disappeared a year and a half ago after penning a note announcing his planned suicide.

Aubrey Lee Price, 47, was stopped along I-95 in Glynn County, Georgia for a tinted window violation, according to local police. Officers said they soon determined he was wanted by the FBI. Price was to appear Thursday before a federal judge in Brunswick, Georgia.

The arrest comes over a year since a Florida judge declared Price legally dead. Despite the ruling, the FBI continued the search, offering a reward of $20,000 for Price’s capture.

Two Amazing Cloudy ‘Super-Worlds’ Spotted By Hubble Telescope

Two teams of scientists using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope have discovered thick cloud layers in the atmospheres of two nearby exoplanets: a “warm Neptune” and a super-Earth. The study could help to identify potentially habitable Earth-like planets.

The two planets are among the closest to our solar system found so far, Sciencerecorder.com reported.

The “warm Neptune”, classified as GJ 436b, is 36 light years from Earth in the constellation Leo. A bit larger than our own Neptune, it orbits much closer to its host star. And unlike the icy temperatures on the solar system’s Neptune, GJ 436b’s surface temperature is blazing hot – more than 500 degrees Celsius.

The super-Earth, named GJ 1214b, has a radius 2.7 times that of Earth and is around 40 light years away in the constellation Ophiuchus.

Super-Earths are planets with masses between that of Earth and Neptune. Because such planets aren’t found in our solar system, their physical characteristics are still largely a mystery.

New York Times Editorial: Snowden is a 'Whistleblower' Who Deserves to Come Home

Silver's picture

By: Alex Kane, 01/02/2014

The New York Times editorial board has come out strongly for clemency or a plea deal for Edward Snowden, the National Security Agency private contractor-turned-whistleblower.

In an editorial, the New York Times pointed out that Snowden’s actions have shed unprecedented light on the actions of the National Security Agency (NSA), a branch of government once jokingly referred to as “No Such Agency” because of its penchant for secrecy.  But now that Snowden blew the whistle on their efforts at mass surveillance, Americans--and the world--know much more about the NSA.  Snowden revealed that the NSA is collecting the metadata from millions of Americans’ phone calls and e-mails, among other revelations.
