The outlook for the western half of the U.S. continued to be bleak on Thursday, as forecasters said drought conditions are expected to expand and intensify all across the West and Southwest.

And Texas, which has been in the throes of drought for the better part of two years, may be hardest hit as its bone-dry conditions are expected to continue into summer, leading to shortages of drinking water.

NASA’s Kepler space telescope has observed the effects of a dead star bending the light of its companion star, one of the first detections of this phenomenon in double star systems.

Showers have continued to drench coastal parts of northeast New South Wales and southeast Queensland, with some places seeing their heaviest April rain in half a decade.

The rain that soaked central NSW yesterday shifted north during the day as a weak low pressure trough moved up the coast and combined with moist onshore winds.

The highest totals were in the northeastern corner of NSW, with widespread falls of 50-70mm. Myocum received the highest total in the state with 95mm to 9am, while nearby Mullumbimby picked up 90mm, its
heaviest April total in four years. Evans Head also copped a drenching with 82mm, the towns heaviest April rain in five years and heaviest rain since January.

As torrential rains stopped and the waters receded, the crisis shifted to guaranteeing public health and safety in this provincial capital of nearly 1 million people. Safe drinking water was in short supply, and more than a quarter-million people were without power, although authorities said most would get their lights back on overnight.

South Australia's peak grain body says warnings of more droughts in key food growing regions reinforce the need to end a ban on genetically modified crops.

According to analysis by the nation's Climate Commission, climate change has already had an irreversible effect on weather patterns across Australia.

The Commission says parts of the country's south-east and south-west have become drier with droughts to occur more often.

Grain Producers SA says farmers will be hamstrung if they cannot adapt to changing conditions.
