Outburst of Andromedid meteors may continue tonight

Expert observers are reporting an unexpected outburst of a little-known (but historical) meteor shower. The Andromedid meteor outburst began yesterday (December 8, 2013) and might not have peaked yet. The Geminid meteor shower is going on now, too, peaking on the mornings of December 13 and 14. So tonight might be an awesome night to go outside and watch for meteors!

The source of last night’s outburst is Comet Biela, which produced a meteor storm in the year 1872. These meteors are called the Andromedids, and sky watchers began noticing an increase in their numbers two years ago.

Winter Storm Dion Update: State-by-State Impacts

Silver's picture

By: weather.com, 12/09/2013

The Mid-Atlantic and Northeast are waking up to a layer of snow and ice this morning from Winter Storm Dion, which will ground flights and make road travel dangerous for a second day. "Assume everything under your feet this morning is ice unless it’s a treated road or surface,” said The Weather Channel meteorologist Mike Seidel, reporting from Leesburg, Va. "You have as much as a quarter of an inch or half an inch of ice on top of the 4 inches of snow. It's coating sidewalks, driveways, cars, trees. Power outages continue to increase (Monday) morning.”

Bushfire season starting earlier, finishing later

In its first report since losing Federal Government funding, the Climate Council says climate change is hampering fuel reduction burning, and causing more frequent high-fire-danger weather. The council, which replaces the former Climate Commission, is now crowd funded, and has compiled data on bushfires in Australia.

ANU professor Will Steffen, who is a member of the council, says in the past 30 years there's been an increase in the frequency of high-fire danger weather. Professor Steffen says the fire season in southern Australia is starting earlier and finishing later, meaning there's less time for fuel reduction burning.

~ Space Weather Update~ GEOMAGNETIC STORM IN PROGRESS

Lia's picture

GEOMAGNETIC STORM IN PROGRESS: A high-speed solar wind stream is buffeting Earth's magnetic field, sparking G2-class geomagnetic storms around the poles. When Earth first entered the solar wind stream during the late hours of Dec. 7th, Northern Lights spilled over the Canadian border into several US states. Christopher Griffith sends this snapshot from Pillager, Minnesota:

"The auroras were dancing lightly across the sky," says Griffith. "It was quite fantastic and fun to watch despite the temperature being -25 F."

NOAA forecasters estimate a 35% chance of additional geomagnetic storms on Dec. 8th and 9th. High-latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras as the solar wind continues to blow. Aurora alerts: text, voice

COMET LOVEJOY'S ACTIVE TAIL: Amateur astronomers around the northern hemisphere are reporting activity in the tail of naked-eye Comet Lovejoy (C/2013 R1). In Nagano, Japan, astrophotographer Kouji Ohnishi could see big changes in less than an hour of monitoring:

By: Chris Dolce, 12/08/2013

Northeast Forecast Sunday

Winter Storm Dion, the fourth named winter storm of the 2013-14 season, will result in more snow and ice for some of the same areas impacted by Winter Storm Cleon. Dion initially produced snow in Washington, California, Nevada and the Four Corners states during the first half of the weekend. Now, Dion is spreading snow and ice from the Midwest to the Mid-South, Ohio Valley, Middle Atlantic and Northeast.

~Space Weather Update~ M-CLASS FLARE

Lia's picture

M-CLASS FLARE: Solar activity ticked upward slightly on Dec. 7th at 07:29 UT with an M1-class solar flare from sunspot AR1909. NASA's STEREO probes detected a CME emerging from the blast site, near the sun's southwestern limb. Earth could receive a glancing blow from the CME on Dec. 9-10. The flare also produced strong VHF radio emissions and a wave of ionization in the over Europe: data. Solar flare alerts: text, voice

THE GHOST OF COMET ISON: This morning, Dec. 6th, leading researchers from the Comet ISON Observing Campaign (CIOC) held an informal workshop at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. One of the key questions they discussed was, Did Comet ISON survive? It might seem surprising that anyone is still asking. After all, the "comet" that emerged from the sun's atmosphere on Thanksgiving day appeared to be little more than a disintegrating cloud of dust. This movie from the STEREO-A spacecraft (processed by Alan Watson) shows the V-shaped cloud fading into invisibility on Dec. 1st:
