Winter Storm Cleon: State-by-State Impacts

Silver's picture

By: Sean Breslin, 12/05/2013

Packing a potentially deadly ice threat that could stretch 1,000 miles from Texas to Ohio, Winter Storm Cleon geared up Thursday to provide another shot of dangerous weather to the Plains and Midwest. "For those who use electric heat, they could be without power for several days, especially in places that are difficult to reach," said Tom Niziol, winter weather expert for The Weather Channel. "This will mean the potential for water pipes freezing and more importantly endangers people who will not be able to stay warm. Plan and prepare to hunker down." Bitterly cold temperatures prompted safety warnings for residents in the Rockies and threatened crops as far south and west as California.

Five Biggest Weather Changes Since Thanksgiving

Silver's picture

By: Jon Erdman, 12/04/2013

South Plunge

Thanks to a powerful plunge of Arctic air, several locations are seeing major changes in their weather since Thanksgiving Day. First, consider Arkansas' capital. Highs Wednesday may top out near 70 degrees. Then comes the Arctic plunge, including a threat of freezing rain or sleet Thursday into Friday, followed by lows Saturday morning near 20 degrees. To recap, a 50-degree plunge – from warmth more typical of late October to a potential icy threat.

Wintry change to chill SA, TAS, VIC and NSW

Silver's picture

Weatherzone, By: Brett Dutschke, 12/04/2013

An abrupt wind change is helping to cool much of southeastern Australia by 10-to-15 degrees, nearly 20 degrees in some places. Inland areas are experiencing the biggest change, heating up to the low-to-mid forties one day and mid-to-high twenties the next as hot northerlies turn colder southerly. Yesterday Coober Pedy reached 45 degrees, 11 degrees above average, and is only likely to get to 27 degrees today, seven below average, an 18-degree drop in 24 hours. Mildura which nudged 40 degrees yesterday should only reach 23 today, a 17-degree drop. For coastal areas the change is not quite as sharp due to sea breezes keeping heat away ahead of the colder change. Adelaide got to 29 degrees yesterday and about 20 today, although showers will make the afternoon a few degrees colder. A similar scenario is unfolding in Melbourne, where it only reached 25 degrees yesterday and 21 degrees today before rain and colder winds kicked in, dropping the temperature to about 15 degrees before lunchtime.

~ Space Weather Update~MOSTLY QUIET~ RARE V-SHAPED SUN HALO

Lia's picture

MOSTLY QUIET: With no sunspots actively flaring, the Earthside of the sun is quiet. However, two sunspots (AR1908 and AR1909) have 'beta-gamma' magnetic fields that harbor energy for moderately strong eruptions. NOAA forecasters estimate a 25% chance of M-class solar flares on Dec. 3rd. Solar flare alerts: text, voice

RARE V-SHAPED SUN HALO: At the end of Thanksgiving Day when the sun was setting over Sumterville, Florida, Paula Phillips took a break from her meal, stepped outside and saw something odd--a pair of luminous 'Vs' in the deepening twilight:

"I've never seen anything like this before," says Phillips. "I photographed the phenomenon with a simple small Samsung camera."

They're sun halos, caused by sunlight shining through ice crystals. Atmospheric optics expert Les Cowley explains:

Decembrrrr! Arctic Blast to Bring Subzero Chill to Rockies, Plains; Hard Freeze for California

Silver's picture

By: Nick Wiltgen, 12/03/2013

Wednesday Highs

December has arrived. And even though the winter season most of us are familiar with, "astronomical" winter, doesn't begin until the winter solstice on Dec. 21, we meteorologists have already started our winter season. Meteorological winter began Dec. 1 and runs through the last day of February.

It looks like Mother Nature is following the meteorologists' calendar this year as bitterly cold arctic air plunges southward across much of the West and eventually expands across the Plains and Midwest. This will send temperatures to their lowest levels of the season – and in some cases, potentially the coldest in several years. Along with the cold comes a nasty bout of snow and ice associated with Winter Storm Cleon.

~ Space Weather Update~COMET ISON, R.I.P.

Lia's picture

CHANCE OF STORMS: NOAA forecasters estimate a 25% chance of polar geomagnetic storms on Dec. 2nd when a CME might deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras. Aurora alerts: text, voice

COMET ISON, R.I.P.: Following its Thanksgiving Day brush with solar fire, sundiving Comet ISON is now just a cloud of dust. Among experts, a consensus is building that the comet broke apart shortly before perihelion (closest approach to the sun). In the movie, note how rapidly the comet fades just before it vanishes behind the occulting disk of the SOHO coronagraph:

After perihelion, the comet emerges as a diffuse remnant of its former self. No one knows for sure what is inside that fan-shaped cloud. Possibilities include a small remnant nucleus or a "rubble pile" of furiously vaporizing fragments. By the end of the day on Nov. 28th, Comet ISON was spent.

As of Dec. 2nd, the cloud of debris is no brighter than a star of approximately 8th magnitude. Experienced astrophotographers might be able to capture the comet's fading "ghost" in the pre-dawn sky of early December, but a naked-eye spectacle is out of the question.
