Catania airport reopens after another eruption from Mount Etna

Magikalspirit's picture

TheExtinctionProtcol Nov 30, 2013

November 30, 2013Catania, ITALY - The eastern Sicilian city of Catania’s Fontanarossa airport reopened on Friday after Mount Etna’s recent eruption halted flights there in recent days, the airport said. Following a quiet summer, Europe’s most active volcano spewed molten lava up thousands of feet high as thick ash clouds spread for miles around. Officials said no serious damage has been caused by the eruption, which caused Etna to produce rare series of perfect steam rings. A dark cloud of tiny rock fragments spread over the island leaving cars, road and beaches covered in a thick black layer earlier this month. Etna’s last major eruption was in 1992 but it has regular smaller ones. –Adnkronos

~ Space Weather Update~ Comet Ison Dies Again?

Lia's picture

CHANCE OF FLARES: Earth-facing sunspots AR1907 and AR1908 have 'beta-gamma' magnetic fields that harbor energy for moderately strong flares. NOAA forecasters estimate a 25% chance of M-flares and a 5% chance of X-flares on Nov. 30th. Solar flare alerts: text, voice

COMET ISON DIES ... AGAIN: Comet ISON is fading fast as it recedes from the sun. Whatever piece of the comet survived the Thanksgiving flyby of the sun is now dissipating in a cloud of dust. Click to view a 3-day movie centered on perihelion (closest approach to the sun):

This development makes it unlikely that Comet ISON will put on a good show after it exits the glare of the sun in early December. Experienced astrophotohtaphers might be able to capture the comet's fading "ghost" in the pre-dawn sky, but a naked-eye spectacle can be ruled out.

On Nov. 29th, pilot Brian Whittaker tried to catch a first glimpse of Comet ISON from Earth, post-perihelion, from a plane flying 36,000 feet over the Arctic Circle in northern Canada. No luck:

~ Space Weather Update~ COMET ISON LIVES! Cancel the funeral. Comet ISON is back from the dead

COMET ISON LIVES! Cancel the funeral. Comet ISON is back from the dead. Yesterday, Nov. 28th, Comet ISON flew through the sun's atmosphere and appeared to disintegrate before the cameras of several NASA and ESA spacecraft. This prompted reports of the comet's demise. Today, the comet has revived and is rapidly brightening. Click to view a SOHO coronagraph movie of the solar flyby:

Before the flyby, experts had made many predictions about what might happen to the comet, ranging from utter disintegration to glorious survival. No one predicted both.

Karl Battams of NASA's Comet ISON Observing Campaign says, "[colleague] Matthew Knight and I are ripping our hair out right now as we know that so many people in the public, the media and in science teams want to know what's happened. We'd love to know that too! Right now, here's our working hypothesis:

Western Qld graziers celebrate storm rain

Silver's picture

By: Chrissy Arthur, 11/29/2013

More storm activity in Queensland's drought-stricken west is forecast, as some graziers celebrate the first decent rain they have seen in more than a year. Patchy storm rain has fallen from the Gulf of Carpentaria down to south-west Queensland, including in towns like Eulo and Cunnamulla. There was also 61 millimetres of rain reported at Mount Pleasant near Hughenden, and 67mm on a property north of Boulia.

Murray Tramby-White manages a place north-west of Winton and says 102mm there will get the property out of trouble. "We haven't had substantial rain here for about 18 months," he said. While across the board, the rain has not been drought-breaking, graziers say it has lifted spirits.

Volcanoes Today, 28 Nov 2013: Etna, Nishino-shima

Magikalspirit's picture

VolcanoDiscovery.com Nov 28 2013

Etna (Sicily, Italy): A new paroxysm has started at the New SE crater. Following weak strombolian activity during the past days, this afternoon, started to rise steeply this afternoon. At the time of this update, there are increasingly strong strombolian explosions or pulsating lava fountains at the New SE crater and an ash plume has started to rise. Bad weather inhibits good observations, but occasional views can be obtained especially from the NE side. You can follow the eruption "live" at our interactive webcam viewer.

Nishino-shima (Volcano Islands, Japan): The youngest island of the world continues to grow as the eruption continues. Recent footage shows (from 24 Nov) shows strombolian activity and a lava flow on the southeast flank of the small new cone.
The strombolian activity often ejects glowing bombs that land in the sea water and create spray and leave short-lived areas of boiling water around them. The longer the eruption continues in this so-called magmatic style (the vent being isolated from sea water, allowing the formation of welded scoria and lava flows), the greater the chances are that the island will survive wave erosion once the eruption stops.

EF2 Tornado Confirmed in North Carolina Following Tuesday Night Severe Weather

By: Sean Breslin, 11/27/2013

An EF2 tornado injured three people in North Carolina Tuesday night, damaging structures along the state's southeastern coast. The tornado was confirmed by a National Weather Service survey crew Wednesday morning due to condominium damage in Atlantic Beach, N.C. The survey was ongoing and more information would be distributed as it was found by the crew, according to the NWS.
