December 1, 2012 – SAN FRANCISCO  — The second in a series of storms slammed Northern California on Friday as heavy rain and strong winds knocked out power, tied up traffic and caused flooding along some stretches. The weather also may be behind the death of a Pacific Gas & Electric worker in West Sacramento who was killed after his truck crashed into a traffic signal pole during the stormy weather. Flights were delayed at San Francisco’s airport, and in the city’s affluent Pacific Heights neighborhood, traffic was blocked for hours after a large tree crashed down, smashing a car and obstructing a busy street.

It will be a wet weekend and, if Thursday was any indication, a dangerous one.

Rain is expected to continue on and off through Sunday night across much of Southern California. A storm system is expected to move in over the San Gabriel Valley Friday, bringing with it a 40 percent chance of rain, National Weather Service spokesman Stuart Seto said.

California Flood Threat From "Atmospheric River"

Wet Setup

Meteorologists use the term "atmospheric river" to describe a long, narrow plume piping deep moisture from the tropics into the mid-latitudes.  One type of atmospheric river you may have heard of is the "Pineapple Express", a pronounced plume tapping moisture from the Hawaiian Islands to the U.S. West Coast.

Amazingly, according to NOAA's Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL), a strong atmospheric river can transport as water vapor up to 15 times the average flow of liquid water at the mouth of the Mississippi River!

CHANCE OF STORMS: NOAA forecasters estimate a 55% chance of polar geomagnetic storms on Nov. 30th when a coronal mass ejection (CME) is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras. Geomagnetic storm alerts: text, voice.

FULL MOON AND JUPITER: When the sun went down last night, Nov. 28th, the full Moon and Jupiter rose in the east only a few degrees apart. The conjunction was so bright, it could be seen through clouds, city lights, and even inside coffee cups. SWx-reader Nancy sends this picture from Sterling, Alaska:

"It was 5 degrees below zero outside," says Nancy, "but [worth braving the cold to see this beautiful conjunction]."
