NEW BATAAN, Philippines -- A typhoon that had left the Philippines after killing nearly 600 people and leaving hundreds missing in the south has made a U-turn and is now threatening the country's northwest as a tropical storm, officials said Saturday.

The weather bureau raised storm warnings over parts of the main northern island of Luzon after Bopha veered northeast. Bopha has weakened to a tropical storm, but it is moving close to shore and disaster officials warned of heavy rains and winds and possible landslides in the mountainous region.

SLIGHT CHANCE OF STORMS: NOAA forecasters have downgraded the odds of geomagnetic storms around the poles today to 15%. Bright auroras are unlikely as Earth's magnetic field remains quiet. Aurora alerts: text, voice.

ANOTHER ERUPTION MISSES EARTH: Magnetic fields around departing sunspot AR1621 became unstable and erupted during the late hours of Dec. 7th, hurling a bulb of plasma off the sun's western limb. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded its departure:

Earth was not in the line of fire. No auroras or other space weather effects will be felt as a result of the blast.

Overall, solar activity is very low. The face of the sun is nearly blank (few sunspots) and NOAA forecasters estimate a slight 1% chance of strong flares during the next 24 hours.

Government agencies and rescue teams in the Philippines are warily watching Typhoon Bopha.

The violent storm blasted the southern part of the island nation earlier this week before moving out to sea.

But now forecasters are warning that Bopha might take a turn back toward land and hit the country again, farther to the north.

Snow-savvy Midwest Cities Breaking No-snow Records

DES MOINES, Iowa -- No snow boots needed in Milwaukee. Chicago commuters aren't dodging knee-deep snow drifts frozen along city sidewalks. And children in Des Moines are settling for ice shavings dumped from a Zamboni.

Many cities in the Midwest haven't seen any decent snow this season -- and some are even setting records for the number of days without it, in part because of a mild late winter and early spring and a slow start to snowfall this season. On Thursday, Des Moines matched a record set in 1889 when it hit its 277th consecutive day without measurable snowfall, according to the National Weather Service. Iowa's capital city is expecting clear skies Friday.

Typhoon Bopha

Typhoon Bopha bears down on the Philippines, as seen from the International Space Station, December 3, 2012.

A typhoon that has killed hundreds of people and left tens of thousands homeless in the southern Philippines has turned back towards the country and will hit it again, forecasters said Saturday.

Typhoon Bopha will slam into the northern tip of the main island of Luzon early Sunday, packing gusts of up to 160 kilometres an hour, the state weather service said.

Record Warmest Year a "Virtual Certainty"

First 11 Months of the Year

A number of 118 (dark red shading) represents the warmest first 11 months on record and a number 1 would indicate the coolest. 18 states have had their warmest year on record through November. 24 states were among their top 10 warmest.

It's a "virtual certainty" that 2012 will be the warmest year on record for the United States, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported Thursday in its November "State of the Climate Report."

The existing record for the United States' warmest year on record was 1998, covering 118 years of data. The record covers the Lower 48 states.

The Magic Mountain

A mountain near Rennes-le-Château is becoming a focal point for unwanted 2012 hype. But the true mysteries and enigmas of Bugarach are fare more interesting, with a real-life Indiana Jones character who dug for the Ark of the Covenant!

On December 21, 2010, the English newspaper “The Daily Telegraph” drew attention to the tiny French village of Bugarach, population 200, and the saga of the end of the Mayan calendar which will occur on December 21, 2012. The mayor of Bugarach, Jean-Pierre Delord, announced that his tiny village was becoming a refuge for “esoterics” who believed that the village played an important role in the 2012 scenario, maybe as a place of salvation, or where the apocalypse might be played out, where alien beings might intervene or even rescue those present. He and the locals were unhappy with this development, which was upsetting the villagers’ tranquillity. As France has a sad past of cults committing mass suicide, Delord felt people should hear his warning that these “esoterics” might do something similar in the near future.
