November 27, 2013 GEOLOGYThe volcano at Mount Sinabung at Jakarta, Indonesia, erupted six times early Monday, shooting volcanic ash 2,000 meters into the sky. Thousands have been evacuated from the region since the Sinabung volcano began erupting sporadically in September. 5,000 people were evacuated from the area the day before the eruption on Monday, bringing the total number of evacuees to 11,000. There have been no casualties so far. The Sinabung is just one of 35 active, erupting volcanoes in the world, according to a categorized list on Volcano Discovery. Of the 35 currently erupting volcanoes in the world, seven are in Indonesia. Most of Indonesia is situated along the “Ring of Fire” — a horseshoe shaped ring around the Pacific where most earthquakes and volcanic eruptions take place. About 50 to 60 volcanoes erupt during a year. – IB Times

The mystery sound could have been a meteor

Meteor explodes across night sky

Quebecers from St. Lazare to Valleyfield to Laval were abuzz on social media Tuesday evening, wondering aloud what the big bang was that rattled their windows and lit up the sky.

It turns out the noise was heard as far south as Plattsburgh, NY, and as far west as Winthrop, NY, which is near Cornwall, Ont.

According to astronomy expert Andrew Fazekas, all signs point to the loud noise and light being caused by a meteor entering the Earth’s atmosphere.

Police officers were sent to Vaudreuil to investigate the sound, but never came up with a location of where the supposed explosion took place, and never could say what caused the noise.

Twitter and Facebook users reported hearing a loud bang and seeing a bright blue light illuminate the sky around 8 p.m.

Lise Berubé said she heard a boom from her home in Pincourt.

~ Space Weather Update~ COMET ISON, SO FAR SO GOOD

Lia's picture

SLIGHT CHANCE OF FLARES: The Earthside of the sun is quiet. NOAA forecasters estimate a slim 1% chance of either M- or X-class solar flares on Nov. 27th. However, there is at least one active region on the farside of the sun which could target Comet ISON when it swings around the farside after Nov. 28th. Solar flare alerts: text, voice

COMET ISON, SO FAR SO GOOD: Comet ISON is hurtling toward the sun today at 240,000 mph and, despite the rising heat, the comet appears to be intact. Yesterday, reports of fading spectral lines from the comet's core raised concerns that the icy nucleus might be disintegrating. Current images from NASA and ESA spacecraft, however, show the comet still going strong. Comet ISON has just entered the field of view of the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO):

Volcanoes Today, 27 Nov 2013: Sinabung, Suwanose-jima, Etna

Etna (Sicily, Italy): No significant changes have occurred. The New SE crater remains restless with some occasional weak activity, visible from time to time as faint glow on the webcam at night. Tremor is currently low.

Suwanose-jima (Ryukyu Islands): Explosive activity has resumed at the remote volcano in the Tokara Island chain. VAAC Tokyo reported explosions yesterday and this morning, with ash plumes rising to 4,000-6,000 ft (1.2-1.8 km) altitude.

Sinabung (Sumatra, Indonesia): The volcano continues to produce near-constant ash venting. The emissions produce a plume rising to estimated 18,000 ft (5.7 km) altitude.

By: Tom Niziol, 11/27/2013

Rain/Snow Forecast

Northeast

Marginal snow will occur from Upstate New York through northern New England Wednesday on the cold side of Boreas. Most of the precipitation associated with Boreas will be off the New England coast by Thanksgiving morning, allowing for much easier travel conditions.  Only 1 to 3 inches of additional snow is likely.

Great Lakes/Appalachians

North to northwest winds will set up localized lake-effect snows near South Bend, Erie, and Syracuse Wednesday through Thursday. As much as 4 to 8 inches of snow is likely and could impact travel in narrow 10 to 15 mile wide bands along the I-80/90 and I-94 corridor off Lake Michigan near South Bend, the I-90 corridor off Lake Erie between Cleveland and Erie and the I-90/I-81 corridor off Lake Ontario near Syracuse.  We will also see snow on the northwest slopes of the Central Appalachians Wednesday through Wednesday night with 3 to 5 inches likely at higher elevations.
