~ Space Weather Update~ WEAK IMPACT, MORE TO COME

Lia's picture

WEAK IMPACT, MORE TO COME: A CME swept past Earth during the late hours of Oct. 26th, but its impact was weak and did not spark significant geomagnetic activity. Attention now shifts to Oct. 28th when the first of the CMEs from last week's X-flares is expected to deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field. NOAA forecasters estimate a 20% chance of polar geomagnetic storms. Aurora alerts: text, voice.

COMET LINEAR X1: The sun isn't the only thing exploding. Almost 450 million km from Earth, Comet C/2012 X1 (LINEAR) is having its own outburst. On Oct. 20th, amateur astronomers realized that the comet's brightness had increased 100-fold and its morphology resembled that of exploding Comet 17P/Holmes in 2007. Follow-up images in recent nights seem to show jet-like structures in Comet LINEAR X1's expanding atmosphere. Amateur astronomer Nick James of Chelmsford, UK, obtained these data on Oct. 26th:

India Floods to get worse in Andhra, situation eases in Odisha; 48 dead

Thirty-two people dead, 15,000 houses collapsed across 4,000 villages, 72,000 people evacuated and crops over 564,000 hectares destroyed – the floods in Andhra Pradesh are getting worse by the hour. And the deluge can only get worse, with more rains expected in the next 48 hours.

The situation is somewhat better in Odisha. But though flood waters are receding, six more persons died on Saturday, taking the toll to 16. And in neighbouring West Bengal, torrential rains flooded streets, uprooted trees and sent houses crashing that took two lives.

For now, the Andhra Pradesh government appears ill prepared to handle the rain fury, which has been continuing for the last five days. Though the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been pressed into service and chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy has asked officials to take up rescue and relief measures on a war footing, the going is slow at best.

ROME -- ROME (AP) — Mount Etna, Europe's most active volcano, has erupted, sending up a towering plume of ash visible in much of eastern Sicily.

Etna's eruptions aren't infrequent, although the last major one occurred in 1992.

The Milky Way's Giant Black Hole (Video)

Sagittarius A*, or Sgr A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy

Researchers using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory have found evidence that the normally dim region very close to the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy flared up with at least two luminous outbursts in the past few hundred years.

This discovery comes from a new study of rapid variations in the X-ray emission from gas clouds surrounding the supermassive black hole, a.k.a. Sagittarius A*, or Sgr A* for short.  The scientists show that the most probable interpretation of these variations is that they are caused by light echoes

Earth's Water Likely Came from Very Early Asteroid Strikes

GFP Commentary: Asteroids, meteors, and comets are often used to bring new life forms and codes to planets, as well as materials and water.

World Action Plan Emerging to Combat Asteroid Threat

Earth got most of its water from asteroid impacts nearly 4.6 billion years ago, shortly after the solar system first took shape, a new study suggests.

Researchers studying a meteorite that fell to Earth in 2000 found evidence that the water in its parent asteroid disappeared soon after the space rock formed, when its insides were still warm. Asteroids that slammed into Earth several hundred million years after the solar system's birth were thus probably relatively dry, scientists said.
