7.3 Magnitude Quake Registered off Central Japanese Coast

An earthquake of 7.3 magnitude has hit 231 miles (371 kilometers) east of Japan’s Honshu Island, according to the US Geological Survey, with tremors felt in Tokyo. Meteorologists warn that a 1-meter-high tsunami could follow.

The tsunami was due to hit at 17.42 GMT in the Fukushima region, the Japanese Weather Agency predicted. The agency issued a “yellow” warning meaning the tsunami is not expected to exceed a height of 1 meter.

Stromboli volcano (Italy): strong activity from NW vent (field observation)

Strrong strombolian explosion from the western vent of Stromboli (24 Oct)

Strrong strombolian explosion from the western vent of Stromboli (24 Oct)

Activity has picked up during the past week. During a visit yesterday afternoon and evening, we observed frequent and often strong strombolian eruptions from the NW vent (Ginostra side), which had enlarged a lot since early this year.
Explosions occurred at 5-10 minutes intervals and produced spatter-rich jets to heights to 200-300 m. Glow from the vent and weak spattering indicates that the magma column inside the western vent has risen high.
In contrast, the central vents were completely inactive and showed no glow, different from what had been observed during most of the past years.
The NE crater (Stromboli side), that had been the site of most activity until early this year, only had weaker and more infrequent (1 per half an hour, approx.) strombolian explosions and showed only weak glow in the intervals.

~ Space Weather Update~ Solar activity is high X~flare

X-FLARE UPDATE: Earth-orbiting satellites have just detected a second X-class solar flare on Oct. 25th. The X2-class eruption at 15:07 UT followed an X1-event at 08:01 UT. There is no reason to think this fusillade will end soon, so stay tuned for more flares. Solar Flare alerts: text, voice.

GLOBAL ERUPTION ON OCT 25TH: Solar activity is high and intensifying. New sunspot AR1882, which rotated over the sun's eastern limb earlier today, promptly unleashed an X1-class solar flare, adding to a series of lesser flares already underway from sunspots AR1875 and AR1877. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded a bright flash of extreme UV radiation from the X1 flare, which peaked at 08:01 UT on Oct. 25th:

There may be more to this flare than meets the eye. Watch this movie of the sun's entire disk. The X1-flare was bracketed by two erupting magnetic filaments, each located hundreds of thousands of kilometers from AR1882. In other words, the X1 flare might have been just one piece of an interconnected global eruption.

Francisco Avoids, But Still Soaks Japan

Francisco Satellite Imagery

Tropical Storm Francisco's time as a tropical cyclone is coming to a close. However, it is helping to bring more heavy rain to parts of Japan.

Francisco made the forecast sharp northeast turn earlier this week under the influence of the increasing westerly mid-latitude winds aloft, and is now steadily losing its tropical characteristics.

A cold front arriving from eastern Asia is now catching up to Francisco, and will help sweep it away from Japan by Saturday.

With that said, moist flow on the east side of Francisco's circulation initially helped stall and intersected this front over southern Japan, producing torrential rainfall.
