MODIS hot spot data (past 7 days) for Ibu volcano (ModVolc, Univ. Hawaii)

MODIS hot spot data (past 7 days) for Ibu volcano (ModVolc, Univ. Hawaii)

Hot spots at the summit have become larger and more frequently observed on recent MODIS satellite data. This indicates that activity has become more intense at the volcano with its active lava dome.

Santiaguito's Caliente lava dome yesterday morning

Santiaguito's Caliente lava dome yesterday morning

An increase in effusive activity was reported. The observatory mentioned "abundant activity" from two lava flows on the western and southern flank of the Caliente dome, which generate block avalanches. Explosive activity has remained at normal, rather weak levels with infrequent ash explosions ejecting plumes of up to about 700 m height.

Close Encounters: Comet Ison

The space-weather community is abuzz with Comet Ison, dubbed by many as ‘The Comet of the Century’.  As it travels deeper into our solar system en route to a close encounter with our sun later in November there are many watching with intense interest.

As some spectacular images of this significantly sized comet emerge (the comet nucleus is estimated to be anywhere between 0.5km – 4km in diameter), we would be wise to bear in mind the electrical nature of comets and the potential implications of its encounter with the sun. Far from being huge chunks of ice, comets are in fact more like asteroids and are highly electrically charged, with the nucleus acting as a charge capacitor. This often very high electric charge interferes with the plasma sheath of the sun, most often resulting in an outburst of plasma from the solar surface, a Coronal Mass Ejection.

~ Space Weather Update~ M and C Class Flares, Exploding Comet

CHANCE OF FLARES: Fast-growing sunspot AR1875 (movie) has developed a 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic field that harbors energy strong explosions. NOAA forecasters estimate a 30% chance of M-class solar flares and a 5% chance of X-flares on Oct. 22nd. Solar flare alerts: text, voice.

COMET EXPLOSION: Almost 450 million km from Earth, Comet C/2012 X1 (LINEAR) has exploded. Amateur astronomers are reporting a 150-fold increase in the comet's brightness on Oct. 20th, and the comet's atmosphere or "coma" now resembles that of exploding Comet 17P/Holmes in 2007. Using a remotely-controlled 0.5 meter telescope in New Mexico, European observers Ernesto Guido, Martino Nicolini and Nick Howes took this picture of the spherical explosion on Oct 21st:
