Moderate 5.1 magnitude earthquake ripples through Toronto, Canada
The Extinction Protocol, 5/17/13

May 17, 2013 – OTTAWA, CAN – Earthquakes Canada is reporting a 5.1-magnitude earthquake just west of Ottawa that was felt as far away as Toronto. The federal agency that monitors earthquakes revised its original report, saying it registered a 5.1-magnitude temblor with an epicenter located about 21 kilometers (13 miles) northeast of Shawville, Quebec, about an hour’s drive outside Ottawa. It was felt as far west as Toronto, Canada’s largest city, but no damage was immediately reported. Twitter erupted with reports of buildings shaking in Ottawa for several seconds. Ontario’s premier, who lives in Toronto, tweeted that her house was shaking. Ontario Provincial Police in Arnprior, Ontario, not far from the epicenter, say they have received no reports of damage. The original report said a 4.8-magnitude quake was centered near the town of Braeside, Ontario.

Photo: Orion’s Hidden Dusty Ribbon Revealed
Nationalgeographic, By: Andrew Fazekas, 05/15/2013

The Orion nebula is one of the most favorite spots for stargazers to explore in the heavens, but this week astronomers are releasing a stunning new look to this giant stellar nursery 1300 light years from Earth.
A fiery cosmic ribbon glows with orange colors as grains of cold interstellar dust light up like a neon sign, shining bright in the far infrared part of the spectrum which is invisible to the human eye. This new image released by the European Southern observatory (ESO) shows this ribbon-like feature superimposed on a more familiar view of the cosmic clouds of dust visible in optical wavelengths.

Rain to spread across the nation
Weatherzone, By: Rob Sharpe, Friday 05/17/2013
Widespread rain is due to impact South Australia, New South Wales, northern Victoria and southern Queensland as a low pressure system and trough move east next week. The trough is expected to deepen over the WA Pilbara on Sunday, beginning an almost nation-wide rain event. Rain will spread into the WA Interior and then reach western parts of South Australia on Monday morning.
South Australia can expect widespread rain due to the broad trough and a developing low pressure system in the Bight. The heaviest rain should impact the Eyre Peninsula, with 20-40mm likely to fall. Most of the state will gain more than 10mm with large portions likely to gain around 20mm.

Early dump of snow for the Alps
Weatherzone, By: Rob Sharpe, 05/16/2013
The Victorian and New South Wales Alps have gained their heaviest snowfall so far this year. Overnight the temperature dropped below freezing at times across the NSW and VIC resorts with snow below 1500 metres in some places. There are reports that over 20cm of snow fell at Falls Creek, Thredbo and Perisher.
The snow has arrived due to a low pressure system in the Tasman Sea. The low has brought a cold airmass and enough moisture for a significant pre-season dumping.

Extreme Weather Whiplash: 106° in Iowa on the Heels of Record May Snows
Wunderground.com - 5/15/13, Dr. Jeff Masters

Does not compute! That must be what residents of Iowa and the Midwest have have been saying to themselves on Tuesday as a ferocious heat wave unprecedented in intensity for so early in the year sent temperatures soaring as high as 108°. Just two weeks ago, the deepest snowfall ever measured during any May of record buried a wide swath from Arkansas to Minnesota, with Iowa breaking its all-time snowfall record for May (13” accumulation at Osage on May 1 - 3.) And how's this for a definition of "Weather Whiplash": Sioux City, Iowa had their first-ever snowfall on record in the month of May on May 1 (1.4"), but hit an astonishing 106° yesterday. Not only was this their hottest temperature ever measured in the month of May, but only two June days in recorded history have been hotter (June, 10, 1933: 107° and June 21, 1988: 108°.) On May 12th they registered 29°, and thus had a 77° rise over 56 hours (from 6 a.m. May 12 to 1:30 p.m May 14.)

Lunar Eclipse Later This Month
Accuweather, 5/16/13 - Mark Paquette
An eclipse of the moon will occur later this month, on May 25. This eclipse will be a penumbral eclipse visible across much of the Americas and Africa. According to Space.com, a penumbral eclipse is defined as "This is the least interesting type of eclipse, because the moon is in Earth's faint outer (penumbral) shadow. Unless you're a seasoned skywatcher, you likely won't notice the effect."
So, later this month, it will not be an outstanding show, but if you know what to look for, it will be interesting. Here is a map of where it may be visible:

Sunspot Blasting Out Major Solar Flares Will Face Earth Soon
Wunderground.com, 5/15/13- Mike Wall

The super-active sunspot responsible for unleashing the three most powerful solar flares of 2013 within a 24-hour stretch this week is slowly rotating toward Earth and will likely be facing our planet by the weekend, experts say.
Active Region 1748, as the sunspot is known, unleashed three monster solar flares between Sunday and Monday (May 12 to 13). Every one of the solar storms registered as an X-class flare — the most powerful type — with each successive event stronger than the last, culminating in an X3.2 megablast Monday night
