After a weekend of pausing to listen to the magi Jupiter, we gather up our rowdy companions Pluto, Uranus, Mars, and Mercury, saying goodbye and continuing on our journey through this lunar month. But we aren’t alone for long.
January’s astrology is also in relationship to the entire year’s since both begin at midnight on the 31st of December. This year, as well, the planets conspire, since the Capricorn New Moon also takes place directly in the opening hours of January 1st. This New Moon is very dramatic, since it closely conjuncts Pluto, and is accompanied by a Grand Cross in cardinal signs, involving, along with transformative Pluto, the trickster energy of Uranus opposed by feisty Mars, with the additional amplification of Jupiter. There is thus a very active lineup of extremely powerful astrological indicators for the New Year. Venus is now retrograde, so that relationships of all kinds are on our minds as we meditate on the changes that 2014 will bring.
Happy New Year everyone! Here we are in 2014 already, can you believe that? And what a year it will be. We start this year with a new moon and a fast-acting cardinal cross in the heavens that will start the year off with a bang, and I am not talking about fireworks. The sun, moon, and Pluto will be conjunct on 11 degrees Capricorn in an exact square to Mars on 11 degrees Libra. This in astrology is considered a negative aspect. The planets have always had a positive and a negative side to them, just like us. Now the energy is moving into unity consciousness for most people.
The negative side of a Mars/Pluto square is impulsive actions, struggles, anger, war, and violence. The positive side of the Mars/Pluto square is the regeneration of ourselves, lots of energy, and rebellious actions that end in a peaceful way. A lot of Astrologers look at this cross and say “Oh my god”, and look for the negative side to manifest. Haven’t we gone through a paradigm shift? Isn’t it time for war to be over? When Comet Ison went by Mars it had an electrical interaction with that planet and Mars became lit up with light. I think this changed the vibration of Mars and it is now time to think of that planet as the planet of peace. We create our own reality by what we chose to perceive as our reality. I choose peace.
A New Moon conjunct Pluto and Mercury to start the New Year. What a powerful symbol of what’s to come in 2014! The chart for this Moon is full of energy, pulling in many different directions. Do we strike out to make our mark or withdraw to the safe familiarity of where we already know acceptance? Do we stand our ground and do what’s best for us or compromise and work with others to bring about a win/win scenario? Do we lean on those around us for support or rely only on ourselves to get us through? There are a lot of ‘either/ors’ in this chart, telling us we stand at the threshold of a year in which we may have to make some very significant choices and then stand by them no matter what. 2014 is a year of decision like no other. Pluto in Capricorn opposes the Black Sun throughout much of it, reminding us that there are two fundamental ways to use our power – for creation or destruction – but in order to grasp the significance of this decision we must be prepared to find the place where destruction becomes creativity and vice versa. We may learn, this year, that creation is not always best if what we create no longer serves the greater good, and destruction is not always bad when what we destroy blocks the light.
