Scotland Village Houses Being Built With Hemp

A new sustainable housing project in the northwest of Scotland will feature industrial hemp as a main building material, reports Green Building Press.

The eco-friendly material is the main component of a pre-fabricated wall system called Hempbuild – a mixture of the plant’s woody core and a lime-based binder. The system was supplied by Hemcrete Projects, an English housing company that specializes in hemp-based construction. So far, two prototype houses have been completed in the Achabeag township, both with very different designs.

Peter Smith of Roderick James Architects explained the decision to use the Hemp-build walling system to Green Building Press.

“Hembuild ticks all of the boxes when it comes to delivering sustainable properties, and the system is ideally suitable for what are two totally different styled houses but which fulfil the requirements of a scheme where the use of natural materials and environmental sustainability are the order of the day.”

Banksy’s classic Christmas card shows a picture of Joseph and Mary crossing the desert on their way to Bethlehem and are blocked by the infamous apartheid wall that separates Israel from Palestine and the West Bank. The card has recently gone viral again because of the holidays, but it is actually a few years old and seems to circulate around this time every year.

The piece first appeared at Santa’s Ghetto exhibit in London in 2005, which followed Banksy’s trip to the middle east.

Himalayan Bees Make Psychedelic Honey

Source: www.themindunleashed.org | Original Post Date: November 3, 2015 –

Locals in China, India, and Nepal risk their lives to obtain the golden liquid that drips from very particular hives deep in the Himalayan forest. This honey is so precious it is called ‘mad honey’ for its interesting properties, coveted the world over.

Honey from the Himalayan cliff bee (Apis dorsata laboriosa) results when the largest bee in the world (just over 3cm long) scavenges pollen from Rhododendron flowers. The highland species has access to the flowers, which are normally highly poisonous to humans. The bee has had little alteration to its genes since its habitat is largely undisturbed in the Himalayan Mountains.

Editor’s Note: After reading this, please visit the follow up to this article here.

If a system does not interact with its environment in any way. . . it does not exist in nature.

I will start this article with the definition of an isolated system: implies a system that does not interact with the other systems of its environment in any way. Now I ask: Does an isolated system exist?

Charity Turns ‘Barefoot’ Grandmothers Into Solar Energy Experts In Six Months

Source: www.themindunleashed.org | Original Post Date: November 26, 2015 –

Some people pay dearly for a degree in solar engineering, but one charity is making ‘barefoot’ grandmothers into life-changing solar energy experts in a matter of months.

A global enterprise, with its start in India, Barefoot College takes elderly women, which many cultures cast aside as useless, relegating them to nursing homes and clinics, and instead, teaches them how to ‘electrify’ entire villages using only solar power.

Some of these women can’t even read, but they can build solar panels, and install solar lighting in some places that have been dark for decades due to the lack of infrastructure.

With the UN estimating that more than 1.5 billion people still live without electricity, the barefoot grandmothers have their work cut out for them.

Entrepreneur Puts Prisons To Shame, Turns Ex-Cons Into Bee-Keepers – Keeping Them Out Of Jail

A Chicago woman has built a business out of not only helping the environment, but helping to create a bright and positive future for ex-cons.

Chicago, IL – Brenda Palms-Barber has created a unique program that accomplishes two noble goals—helping troubled honeybee populations and helping ex-cons stay out of jail.

Sweet Beginnings, located in Chicago’s West Side, is a social enterprise business that turns former prisoners into beekeepers. This interaction with some of our most important friends in the natural world has a striking success rate.

According to FUSION:

“Graduates of the program have a recidivism rate of only 4%, compared with the national average of 40% and the state average of 55%. Unlike many other social enterprises, Sweet Beginnings is also profitable, bringing in a tidy $9,000 last year.”

5-Star Chef Feeds A Million Homeless After Seeing One Man Do Something Unthinkable

We all look for inspiration, and sometimes it comes from the most gut-wrenching experience imaginable. Narayanan was a five-star chef, set to embark on a career feeding Michelin-caliber guests at high-priced tables when his life took an unexpected turn.

The 29-year old wakes up before dawn, and travels over 200 kilometers to feed people in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The people Krishnan feeds don’t have black Amex cards, nor do they stay in swanky hotels. They are all homeless.

This amazing man feeds more than 400 destitute people every day, often with his own, bare hands. He even offers those that need it a free haircut, and even a bath if they care for one.

20 Women Were Elected In Saudi Arabia As Women Voted For The First Time

History has been made! Last Saturday in Saudi Arabia, twenty women were elected to public office in a landmark election.

This was the first time women were allowed to vote, as well as the first time they were allowed to run for local municipal council seats. In total, 131,000 registered females showed up at the polling place to participate (in contrast to 1.4 million men).

Because Saudi women are still not allowed to drive, the female voters had to either rely on men to drive them to the polls or Uber. The transportation app offered a free ride to any ladies who needed to cast their votes on the big day.

WikiLeaks: US, Israel, And Saudi Arabia Planned To Overthrow Syrian Govt. In 2006

Cables reveal that before the beginning of the Syrian revolt and civil war, the United States hoped to overthrow Assad and create strife between Shiite and Sunni Muslims.

Speaking from Ecuador’s embassy in London, Julian Assange revealed that the United States planned to overthrow the Syrian government as far back as 2006, several years before the start of the current crisis.

The founder of WikiLeaks took refuge in the Embassy of Ecuador in 2012. The premises remain under siege 24 hours a day by a large team of police to prevent Assange from ever stepping foot outside, at a cost to taxpayers that now exceeds £12 million.

The ongoing threat to his freedom hasn’t kept Assange from continuing his work revealing the dirty secrets of world governments. His latest revelations come in an interview with RT in support of his new book, “The WikiLeaks Files,” published late last month.

Armless Man And His Blind Best Friend Have Planted More Than 10,000 Trees In China

Source: www.themindunleashed.org | Original Post Date: November 9, 2015 –

It doesn’t happen often, but every now and then you hear a story about people overcoming all odds to help others and it completely changes your perspective of the world.

Two Chinese men, 53-year-old Jia Wenqi and 54-year-old Jia Haixia, have been doing something amazing for the last 13 years. They have planted more than 10,000 trees around Yeli Village in northeastern China, a region which once was covered in nothing but rocks and weeds. But what is really stunning about this story is that both friends have severe physical disabilities – Haixa is completely blind and Wenqi is a double amputee with no arms. Yet, it did not prevent them from accomplishing their mission.

Haixia was born with congenital cataracts which left his left eye blind. In 2000, he lost sight in his other eye after a work accident. Wenqi had a tragic accident at the age of three years old, as a result of which he lost both of his arms.
