COLORFUL STRATOSPHERIC CLOUDS OVER EUROPE: When the sun set over the UK on Dec. 9th, sky watchers were stunned by an unexpected apparition of super-colorful stratospheric clouds. "They were amazing to see and a dream come true to photograph," reports Lesley Jennings of Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. "There were all sorts of colors. I've never see the like before!" added Rachael Taylor also from Aberdeenshire. Nigel Feilden photographed this specimen from Inverurie, Scotland:
"These are nacreous clouds," explains atmospheric optics expert Les Cowley. "Of all Earth's clouds they are most spectacular, and a very rare treat for skywatchers.
Super Typhoon Bopha devastated the Philippines last week then went out to sea, re-intensified and turned back to hit them again on December 9th. It carried heavy rains and was expected to cause more flooding and more landslides. Because the area was so heavily affected the first time, damage reports will probably be delayed and unclear.
Freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall have killed at least six people and caused travel chaos across the Balkans. The deaths occurred as a result of widespread blizzard conditions.
Central and southern Italy is being hammered by unusual snowstorms and sub-zero temperatures.
The UK continues to experience “arctic conditions.”
Winter Storm Caesar, the heaviest snowstorm to hit the region in two winters, dumped heavy snow across a broad belt of Minnesota including the Twin Cities area Sunday, as well as parts of western Wisconsin. Caesar also impacted North and South Dakota.
Following our mission to clear energy and cut energetic cords on Saturday, the Washington D.C. area was swallowed by a heavy fog that lasted for 33 hours.
More than a dozen people were injured and over 500 houses damaged when a tornado swept through Indonesia on Dec. 11th.
The following volcanoes are showing increased and/or unusual activity: Tolbachik and 3 other volcanoes in Kamchatka, Sheveluch, Lokon, Paluweh, Manam, and Langila. Mount Lokon, in Indonesia erupted three times on Dec. 11th, sending ash plumes as high as 3 kilometers into the sky. The explosive sound of the first violent eruption sent people running into the streets.
Severe thunderstorms and two to twelve tornadoes swept through the deep south of the U.S. on Dec. 10th, moving all the way from Florida to Texas. Naturally this caused a lot of damage but I have not seen any reports of injuries or casualties."
