It is clear that government, food corporations, and industrial agriculture are not interested in informing the public about genetically modified food.  Even the ability to perform independent scientific research is stifled by these entities.

In the face of this we must relay on grassroots market power and the free transfer of knowledge that still exists.  Thousands of smaller grocers exist across the country providing certified non-GMO alternatives and educating customers about GMOs.  They work with manufacturers and local producers to transition to non-GMO ingredients.

All approvals of GM crops in Brazil fail to conform with legal norms and twist science in the interests of GM companies, says regulator. The article below was submitted to Consea, the food safety advisory body to the Brazilian president, by Leonardo Melgarejo, a member of Brazil's GMO regulatory body CTNBio.

In the article, Melgarejo criticizes the release of GMOs in Brazil and exposes CTNBio's negligence in assessing them for safety. He describes unscientific tricks that are also used by European Food Safety Authority in its evaluations of GM foods, such as dismissing significant differences in GM-fed animals as not being biologically relevant - without any scientific justification. Melgarejo adds that all releases of GMOs in Brazil thus far are illegal because they fail to conform with legal norms set by the regulators.

Facebook has been accused of being a facade for free speech as it has been known to censor controversial content. For example, earlier this year, Mark Zuckerberg was called out for practicing censorship when a Facebook ad by CREDO Mobile was pulled for criticizing his financial and political ties to the Keystone XL pipeline.

The group March Against Monsanto announced yesterday on their Facebook page that Facebook removed an event page promoting a rally in St. Louis, MO, where the biotech giant is headquartered. The rally is set to take place on Saturday, Oct. 12, with a broad coalition of regional groups and solidarity activists planning to converge at the company’s corporate headquarters. While the event did not contain derogatory or inappropriate content, it was removed for violating Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities. The group has since created a new event page for the rally.

Contrary to claims by Monsanto and government conspirators, we can indeed meet the world’s hunger without the use of genetically modified seed and manufactured chemicals. Bumper crops of rice, potatoes, and wheat are being grown in India using methods of Agroecology.

Agroecology is a dynamic agricultural approach that uses scientific information and local knowledge to produce practical methods that are low-cost and ecologically sound. This is quite a contrast to the “one size fits all” approach of GMO crops and chemical inputs being peddled by Monsanto and friends.

Thousands of farmers and their allies gathered in New Delhi from 20 states across India on Thursday to demand that multinational corporations that make genetically modified organisms (GMOs) 'Quit India.' The reference to India's historic 'Quit India' civil disobedience movements for independence from Britain charged the thousands-strong day-long sit-in at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, followed by a large march to parliament demanding an end to dependence on GMO corporations.

Protesters handed an Indian flag made of organic, non-GMO cotton to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday to protest a new Biotech Regulatory Authority of India (BRAI) bill to fast-track GMO clearance in a country already dominated by GMO corporate giants. "We request the PM to hoist an organic, Indian cotton flag because it will be symbolic of seed sovereignty," declared Pankaj Bhushan, co-convener of GM-Free India Coalition, urging the prime minister not to fly the flag of U.S. multinationals that corner 93 percent of the country's cotton seed industry.
